The first KamAZ two-axle main line of serial production
KAMAZ-5460 is a two-axle main truck tractor of mass production, which was produced by the Kama Automobile Plant from 2003 to 2013. The model was aimed at conquering the most capacious segment of the Russian market - tractors for domestic intercity transportation. In the process of its evolution, new solutions were introduced that made the car more powerful, faster and more economical, increased its resource, reduced the cost of diesel fuel and spare parts, reduced the weight of the car, as a result of which more cargo could be transported. And also prepared the release of a more modern successor - KamAZ-5490.
About the history of the Chelny "truck driver No. 1"
Since Soviet times, two areas of work of our largest manufacturers have developed on the domestic market of heavy vehicles: KamAZ prevailed in the segment of construction equipment, MAZ - trucks for "long-range" transportation and main tractors.
The weak points of KamAZ trucks, which made them unsuitable for a full-fledged "long-range" were: a relatively low-power engine that was not able to work properly as part of 40-ton road trains; the wheel formula 6x4, outdated for these purposes, the high landing of the fifth wheel hitch and, of course, the old cabin, “of the times of the King of Peas”. Anyone who has had a chance to drive at least one fairly long trip on a classic KamAZ cannot but pay tribute to the courage and endurance of drivers working on a long-distance trip on such a rigid cab suspension.
In the summer of 2002, at the Moscow International Motor Show in the Exhibition Complex on Krasnaya Presnya, the first two-axle saddle in the history of the Kama Automobile Plant, KamAZ-5470, was presented. The cabin remained basically the same, but was lengthened back, equipped with a high roof, two full-fledged berths, a modern dashboard, and “stuffed” in every possible way. The truck was equipped with a Rockwell (USA) rear axle. However, at a price of 40 thousand dollars, this car had no chance to get on the conveyor.
The pioneer of the class is KAMAZ-5470.
And so it happened, so a year later the KamAZ-5460 appeared, which cost dealers 22 thousand in dollar terms. The first serial KamAZ truck forty tons designed to work with European trailers. This truck had the main features of a mainline tractor, but there were still a lot of temporary solutions in its design. This machine needed further improvement and was made with them in mind.
First modernization: 2006, KamAZ-5460-046-22 "Stayer"
The development of the basic model was the upgraded KamAZ-5460-046-22 truck tractor, released in 2006, aka "Stayer". It was equipped with a 400-horsepower low-speed KamAZ-740.37-400 engine with Bosch fuel equipment that complies with the Euro-2 standard (initially, a diesel engine with a power of 360 hp was installed on KamAZ-5460).
The gearbox remained the same, 16-speed, from ZF. And the rear axle began to use a completely new one - high-speed, hypoid, from the Bulgarian company Madara.
The Stayer used an imported Wabco brake system with ABS and an RBL power steering. And the new Yaroslavl tires with a dimension of 315/60R22.5, the new air suspension and the Jost fifth wheel coupling provided the new version of KamAZ-5460-046-22 with a reduced saddle height - 1150 mm from the asphalt level.
The frame spars were reinforced, but not due to an increase in the thickness of the rolled products, but an additional smaller spar was inserted into the longitudinal spar along the entire length.
The suspension of the first KamAZ-5460 was completely spring. During the modernization, the rear axle received an adjustable air suspension. It was assembled in Chelny, but its components were completely imported: the cylinders were purchased in Hungary, and the Wabco pneumatic control system was in Germany. The Wabco single-column air dryer is mounted behind the bumper in front of the right wheel and requires the cab to be raised to reach it. Anti-roll bars on the front axle and drive axle ensured better truck stability in corners. The tractor was also used a cross-axle differential lock to confidently overcome snow-covered sections of roads.
First of all, the radiator grill attracts attention. The updated cab received integrated side fairings - to reduce turbulence on the sides and contamination of the doors. The design of the bumper has changed, lighting equipment has been installed more efficient. New running boards with lattice overlays were introduced to facilitate climbing into the cab, as well as a roof fairing that improves aerodynamics and reduces diesel fuel consumption.
A three-brush windshield wiper was installed on the windshield, with a tighter fit of the brushes than the previous one and a larger glass cleaning area. On the updated KmaAZ-5460, the cab hydraulic lift was moved from behind the wing to the right footboard, to the very bottom. And the lever for him, according to tradition, remained the montage, the place of which is in the tool box on the chassis.
Cabin doors began to open unusually gently; The handles are no longer made of steel, but of plastic. In place of the previous rotary locks, which require regular adjustment, they put the same ones as on passenger VAZs. A steel underride bar was placed under the bumper, like in European mainline tractors.
KAMAZ-5460-046-22 "Stayer" with a "tonar" trailer.
But in general, of course, the cab of the upgraded trunk line differed slightly from the base KamAZ-5460, but new hydraulic locks were introduced into its suspension; inside the cabin, a carefully designed instrument panel of a new sample and a driver's seat with air suspension appeared. This is a seat of domestic production, from manufacturers in Yekaterinburg (Pilot), Chelny (RIAT) or Yelabuga. The pedal assembly was changed - it became with an upper suspension.
The combination of a new driver's seat, an adjustable steering column and a pedal assembly with an upper pedal suspension has clearly improved the ergonomics of the driver's workplace and increased its comfort. But the gearshift lever, according to reviews, turned out to be too tilted forward. As a result, in order to turn on or off some speeds, you have to lean noticeably.
Second modernization, 2010
First of all, it was necessary to change the cabin: from the old one they had already “squeezed everything that was possible”. Yes, and it was impossible, with all the desire, to convert the cabin of a predominantly construction dump truck of the 70s model into the cabin of a modern mainline tractor. In search of the best option for a new "long-range" cab of increased volume with a full-fledged four-point air suspension, KamAZ negotiated with MAN to purchase a license for the production of a TGA cab. But it did not work out: things did not go beyond a few copies. Apparently, because of the high cost of the product.

The second attempt was - for several years to put on KamAZ tractors the cab of the discontinued MAN F2000, which was produced under license by the Chinese at the Shaanxi plant (now Shacman). And then start the production of completely new cabins: an order for their development was placed in South Korea, and the launch of the series is scheduled for 2013.

However, these plans were crossed out: in 2008, a fateful deal with Daimler took place: Daimler AG bought a 10% stake in KamAZ for $ 250 million and received a seat on the board of directors, and in return, the Russian manufacturer got the opportunity to acquire licenses for production and use for their trucks of German components and assemblies. First of all, cabs from the previous generation Mercedes-Benz Axor.
By the time the upgraded KamAZ-5460 with a Mercedes cab was put into production, the KamAZ investment project to upgrade production had already been implemented and launched. During 2007-2009, an automated line for priming, painting and drying cabin parts from Dürr was launched, worth 1.5 billion rubles, with a capacity of 75 thousand cabins per year, with the possibility of increasing output to 125 thousand.

In 2013, KamAZ-5460 gave way to its successor in the production program of the plant - the main tractor KamAZ-5490.
KamAZ-5460 engines
The KamAZ-5460 trucks used classic KamAZ eight-cylinder V-shaped diesel engines of various capacities, equipped with a turbocharging system. But they were built on the basis of a modernized cylinder block. At the same time, the use of new materials for them contributed to an increase in the rigidity of the structure and a decrease in noise during operation. The cylinder heads are reconfigured due to the installation of upgraded diesel fuel injection nozzles. To improve heat transfer, an oil cooler with an increased airflow area was used.
Despite the external similarity and almost the same overall dimensions (the crank radius has increased by only 5 mm), the long-stroke diesel engines KamAZ-5460 differ significantly from the classic KamAZ engines of the previous generation. Less than thirty percent of parts and spare parts remained interchangeable. The changes were due to the desire to provide an increase in power, torque, and also to increase the life of the diesel engine. This is a whole range of measures: from increasing the diameter of the bolts for fixing the main bearing caps to seriously modernized motor systems (power, lubrication, cooling), as well as making the casting of the cylinder block more rigid.
Engines fit into Euro-3 standards using Yaroslavl high-pressure fuel pumps YAZDA-337-23 with an electronic control system, or similar, but in-line Bosch P7100 pumps, also with an electronic regulator RE-30. They provide increased spray pressure. The injectors used multi-hole atomizers, the rigid mechanical connection between the accelerator pedal and the pump rail was eliminated, and its drive was changed.
Important additions to the fuel system, which until recently were out of the question, are the fuel intake and an additional fuel filter-sump with electric heating (and for the north, also fuel line heating). The fuel system of KamAZ for the first time received the possibility of standard equipment with a heating system for diesel fuel supply lines (as an additional option).
Previously, domestic drivers warmed up the diesel "jelly" on their own: they hung a headlight bulb in the tank - closer to the fuel intake, let the return line through the compressor head, wound a copper tube with a return line around the exhaust manifold in a spiral. Or they welded an exhaust pipe into a homemade tank so that diesel fuel was heated by exhaust gases.
KAMAZ 740.50-360 engine complies with the environmental standards of the Euro-2 standard and develops a power of 360 horsepower. Air injection with intercooling is carried out by 2 imported Schwitzer turbochargers, or domestic ones - 7C-6.
2. The KamAZ 740 engine. 63-400 with a capacity of 400 horsepower was installed on the KamAZ-5460 of the first modernization, after 2006. Bosch fuel equipment was integrated into the design of this motor, which made it possible to achieve compliance with the Euro-3 international standard. But for restyled KamAZ trucks, the engines of the first option also remained available - without Common Rail, with a capacity of 360 hp.
3. KAMAZ-740-73-400 has a power of 400 hp. and complies with Euro-4 environmental standards. To improve the purity of the exhaust, a system equipped with an exhaust gas neutralizer (it is located in the muffler) was used.
4. KAMAZ-740.64-420 , 420 hp, Euro-3 version, Common Rail electronic injection. Its electronic control unit is located in front, in the collapse of the block.
5. KAMAZ-740.74-420 , with a power of 420 hp, corresponding to Euro-4 standards, using the AdBlu reagent.
In addition to the modernization of fuel equipment, a whole range of other improvements were introduced into the new 740 series. In particular, a new material was used for the cylinder block: cast iron ChVG-35 with vermicular graphite, the strength characteristics of the main body part were improved. In cooperation with Federal Mogul, changes were made to the design of parts of the cylinder-piston group: the used alloys were replaced with more modern ones, and the technology of applying a chromium-diamond coating to the piston rings was introduced.
In addition, in order to increase the resource of KamAZ engines with a capacity of 400 hp. With. and above, the process of carbonitriding the crankshaft was introduced. The update also affected the lubrication and cooling systems: the heat exchange surface in the oil heat exchanger was increased. And yet - the designers changed the shape of the cylinder heads, taking into account the installation of fuel injectors and introduced a one-piece flywheel housing, in accordance with SAE1 standards.

Power unit and fuel consumption KAMAZ-5460
The main line of power units that equip KamAZ-5460 consists of three domestic turbocharged engines:
- KAMAZ-740.61-320;
- KAMAZ 740.50-360;
- KAMAZ-64-420.
KAMAZ-740.61-320. This four-stroke diesel meets the Euro 3 requirements in terms of its environmental performance. The engine has an impressive displacement of 11.8 liters and, at a crankshaft speed of 1,900 rpm, develops a rated power of 320 horsepower. This indicator is achieved due to the presence of a turbocharging system, the main elements of which are two turbochargers and a gas turbine. Note that this engine uses ONV technology (forced charge air cooling), and the turbodiesel is also equipped with an electronic control unit. The installation of KamAZ-740.61-320 was carried out on small batches of KamAZ-5460 trucks, as cars with more powerful engines are used on the market.
KAMAZ 740.50-360. For most characteristics, this motor does not differ from its predecessor. This is an eight-cylinder diesel engine with a V-shaped arrangement of cylinders and a camber of 900. However, thanks to a change in certain settings and minor changes in the design, engine power has increased to 360 horsepower, although its environmental index has fallen to Euro 2 standards.
KAMAZ 740.50-360
KAMAZ-64-420. The most powerful and popular engine in the KamAZ-5460 engine range. The production of this engine was launched in 2008, its environmental parameters comply with Euro 3 requirements. Structurally, KamAZ-64-420 is an eight-cylinder, V-shaped four-stroke diesel engine with a turbocharging system and forced air cooling function. The working volume of the engine has not changed - 11.76 liters, but its rated power, at a crankshaft rotation speed of 1,900 rpm, has increased to 420 horsepower, maximum torque - 1864 Nm, at a rotation speed of 1,300 rpm. The engine is equipped with an electronic control system that helps save fuel and reduces the emission of harmful substances into the atmosphere.
KAMAZ-64-420
The fuel consumption rate of KamAZ-5460 depends on the technical condition of the truck and operating conditions. When driving on flat roads at a speed of 70-80 km / h and a semi-trailer up to 20 tons, the car consumes 25-27 liters of diesel fuel. When transporting heavy loads on rough roads in mountainous terrain, the tractor can consume from 40 to 50 liters of fuel.
In the basic configuration, KAMAZ-5460 is equipped with a fairly capacious fuel tank with a volume of 500 liters, the KAMAZ-5460-046-22 modification is equipped with a 700-liter tank.
Transmission and power supply KAMAZ-5460
KAMAZ-5460 is aggregated with a mechanical sixteen-speed gearbox ZF 16S151 from the German company ZF Friedrichshafen AG. The gearbox consists of a main eight-speed box, a two-stage divider and a demultiplier. The forward speeds are switched on with the help of synchronizers, the rear ones - through a gear clutch. The box is controlled remotely using a rocking lever. The interaction between the engine and gearbox is mediated by the MFZ-430 diaphragm single-plate clutch from ZF SACHS. The clutch is equipped with a hydraulic drive and pneumatic booster.
The top models of the KamAZ-5460 tractor are equipped with an automatic twelve-speed gearbox ZF-Astronic12AS 1931TO. Automatic transmission provides excellent acceleration dynamics and at the same time its use does not lead to a significant increase in fuel consumption. The box is equipped with an electro-pneumatic control system and is aggregated with an automatic clutch.
Single-core wiring with a 24-volt mains voltage is responsible for powering electrical appliances and electronic components of the car. The car is equipped with two 12-volt storage batteries with a capacity of 190 Ah and a 28-volt two-kilowatt generator. An inverter located in the cab of the truck is responsible for voltage stabilization.
Brake system and suspension KAMAZ-5460
The KamAZ-5460 truck tractor is equipped with slightly outdated, but quite effective drum-type brakes. Each wheel is equipped with a pneumatic brake mechanism with a drum diameter of 420 millimeters and a pad width of 1800 mm. In addition to the main one, the backup, auxiliary and parking brake is responsible for the safety of the truck, if necessary, it is possible to make an emergency release of the wheels using a special pneumatic mechanism. All brake systems of a car have many common parts and assemblies, but at the same time they are able to work autonomously. The truck is equipped with the ABC system, which greatly increases the safety of the machine when driving on the road.
The first versions of KamAZ-5460 had a traditional leaf spring suspension, which was later partially abandoned by installing the rear bogie on an air suspension. In this regard, the smoothness of the ride increased, and it was also possible to reduce the height of the fifth wheel mechanism. The front suspension is implemented according to the old scheme, in which the main role is played by semi-elliptical springs with hydraulic shock absorbers. In order to prevent dangerous rolls and overturning of the truck, the front bogie is equipped with an anti-roll bar.

Transmission. brakes
The truck is equipped with a MFZ-430 diaphragm disc clutch from ZF Sachs (Germany) and a manual gearbox from ZF. At first they planned to develop their own original transmission, but then this idea was abandoned, and in the end it was decided to stop at an imported one. KamAZ-5460 models began to be equipped with 16-speed German-made ZF gearboxes, models ZF 16S151 or ZF 16S1820. After the creation of a joint production with ZF Friedrichshafen - in Naberezhnye Chelny - these manual transmissions began to be produced here, with a localization level of up to 50%.
With an eye on their European counterparts, Chelnyers also aggregated their 420-horsepower diesel engine with an automated ZF AS-Tronic gearbox (in Europe, MAN TGA / TGX, DAF XF and Iveco Stralis are equipped with it). At the same time, the gearbox control joystick was borrowed from DAF XF tractors, and its console with a mode switch was made in-house. The letter "A" means automatic mode, "M" - manual, "S" - manual using automation, and the modes "DM" and "RM" - reduced, shunting. Gears shift imperceptibly, the car picks up speed smoothly. For ease of driving, the display of the instrument panel provides an indication of the selected gear.
Torque is transmitted to the rear axle, which is equipped with a single-stage main pair with hypoid gearing. Over the years of production, KamAZ-5460 tractors were produced with two options for the main gear ratio - 3.58 and 3.36. Additional planetary gearboxes are located in the hubs of the drive wheels.
The vehicles can be equipped with axles of both KamAZ's own production, as well as Bulgarian Madara, and Chinese FAW (the most common option).
The KamAZ-5460 tractor is equipped with a brake system with a pneumatic drive of the actuators. The machine uses drum brakes with a working surface diameter of 420 mm. The area of the brake pads is 4800 cm², with a working surface width of 180 mm. The braking system also includes an anti-lock braking system (ABS) with electronic brake force control.
Specifications
The KamAZ-5460 vehicle, according to its technical characteristics, allows it to work as part of road trains with a carrying capacity of 40 thousand kg. On a number of tractors, the 740-63-360 engine was used, developing 340 hp. With. and conforming to Euro-2 requirements. The lubrication system, cooling and overall dimensions of the engine do not differ from the 400-horsepower version.
The KamAZ-5460-066-33 version is distinguished by the use of a cabin with an increased roof height, which made it possible to place 2 berths in height. On the basis of this model, the "Stayer" variant was produced, which was distinguished by finishing materials, a Euro-3 standard engine and three wiper blades.
power unit
The truck uses 8-cylinder diesel engines of various capacities. The engines are built on the basis of a modernized cylinder block. The use of special materials for the block made it possible to increase the rigidity of the structure and reduce noise during operation. The block heads have a modified configuration due to the installation of upgraded fuel injection nozzles. To improve heat transfer, an oil cooler with an increased airflow area was introduced.
The fuel system is optionally equipped with a heating system for diesel fuel supply lines. The device is used on machines operated in the northern regions of the country. Depending on the exhaust toxicity standards, various fuel supply equipment is used.
Fuel consumption
The fuel consumption of a tractor depends on the season, the condition of the road surface and engine, the loading of the road train and a number of other factors. Under standard operating conditions, a road train with a load of 20 thousand kg consumes 26-28 liters of fuel per 100 km on the highway. Driving with heavy trailers on mountain roads leads to an increase in consumption of up to 40 liters of diesel fuel per 100 km.
The fuel supply is in the tank, fixed on the left side member of the frame behind the driver's cab. The tank is designed for 500 liters of diesel fuel. The KamAZ-5460-046-22 variant is equipped with a tank with a capacity increased by 200 liters.

The KamAZ 5460 truck with a carrying capacity of about 20 tons is equipped with a shortened chassis, which was taken from the 5320 model. This design option is the most suitable, technically well-thought-out and reliable. The main difference between KamAZ 5460 and previous models in the line is the absence of one drive axle. The machine has 2 axles, one of which is the leading one. The bridge is equipped with a differential lock, as well as a high-speed gearbox. Structurally, the chassis has a built-in wheel inflation system. The track width has not changed at all, while the manufacturer has added several transverse stabilizers to provide the car with maximum stability at high speeds and tight turns.
Reviews about tractors KAMAZ-5460
Over the years since the premiere of its two-axle mainline tractor, KamAZ has moved far ahead in the production of trucks of this format. In addition to the cabins (upgrading the old one and introducing a completely new one), the plant seriously worked out and improved its V-shaped power units of the 740th series, bringing them to a power of 420 hp. According to the drivers, the truck is more than enough for it on the tracks, including when driving uphill for a long time.
Features of KamAZ 5460
The domestic KamAZ 5460 is a brand new truck that is designed to transport semi-trailers over long distances. The equipment is produced at the Kama Automobile Plant, while the assembly of components is carried out using world-class units and branded spare parts.
Compared to previous models, the 5460 features an updated cabin and interior design.
In addition to the external design, the equipment is equipped with a modern diesel-type power unit with a built-in turbine. The KamAZ-64-420 engine brand has about 420 hp, power, complies with Euro-3 environmental standards and works in conjunction with Bosch fuel equipment. High build quality also distinguishes KamAZ 53215 from other analogues.
Key features of the new KamAZ:
- updated design;
- improved technical part;
- more powerful engine;
- reinforced frame;
- modified chassis and bridges.
The cab of the car is a three-seater, and some modifications are equipped with an extra bed. In addition to the new design, KamAZ is equipped with various new features and built-in tools. In general, the car has become more electronics, which greatly facilitates driving.
Scope of use
The KamAZ 5460-046-22 tractor is actively used by various transport companies for the transportation of goods between cities, as well as for work abroad. This car is great for road use. Compared to previous versions, the 5460 also has much better road holding. This KAMAZ is able to work with almost all existing types of semi-trailers. In the domestic space, the technique is successfully used for the transportation of commercial products, cars, construction and bulk materials, as well as large items. There are also special tractors based on this vehicle, in particular, the most common is a timber carrier and equipment for transporting long materials (piles, logs, poles, trusses or beams). In agriculture, KamAZ 65117 is often used.
Body options
The KamAZ 5460-066-33 car can be equipped with different body types, however, as standard, the equipment has a coupling device for attaching a semi-trailer. During the creation of this model, the manufacturer took into account future modifications, so the main frame practically did not undergo global changes. Thanks to the powerful supporting frame, several types of bodies can be installed on KamAZ:
- dump truck;
- onboard;
- truck tractor;
- board with an awning;
- refrigerator;
- platform.
Additional factory modifications provide for the installation of various auxiliary equipment, for example, the 5460M model is equipped with fastening systems for transporting containers or bulky goods. For construction, the plant produces automobile mixers for transporting concrete mixtures. Due to the long cargo part of the frame, almost all types of bodies, including tanks, can be installed on KamAZ.
The cost of used KamAZ-5460
The cost of used KamAZ-5460
There are many offers on the secondary market for the sale of used saddles of this brand produced in 2003-2013. They ask for them from 450 thousand to two million rubles - depending on the year of manufacture and technical condition.
In general, the modernized KamAZ-5460 was also not a full-fledged mainline tractor. But this was a real step forward: the Chelny plant showed not another "promising model", but a real commercial product, available for order from dealers immediately after its official demonstration at the Moscow International Motor Show-2006.
An important plus of KamAZ-5460 is a more affordable price compared to MAZ (and, moreover, European imported) “classmates”. KamAZ has a wide service network that covers all regions of Russia and the CIS. There are no problems with spare parts, and they are usually cheaper than parts for European tractors.
