Ural 5557 is a dump truck-tractor manufactured by the Ural Automobile Plant. The model has become widespread in agriculture.
The car is produced in an all-wheel drive version with a 6x6 wheel arrangement. It differs from the Ural 4320 model in low-profile wide tires with adjustable wheel inflation. Thanks to this, the patency of the car is improved. Ural 5557 performs especially well in the harsh regions of the North, on virgin snow, on soft and sandy soils and in swampy areas. The car is produced in several modifications (standard versions, fire engines, truck cranes, fuel trucks and others).
In the product line of the Ural Automobile Plant, this model is considered one of the most reliable and massive.
Model history and purpose
The history of Ural 5557 is closely connected with the Ural 4320 car. The latter became the first domestic truck with a diesel unit. The model turned out to be very popular, because in 1983 the premiere of a new brand product made on its basis took place. The appearance of Ural 5557 was not accidental. In 1982, the USSR adopted a production program that included many economic, organizational and logistical measures aimed at combating production problems. To achieve these goals, Ural 5557 was created. A heavy-duty dump truck with increased cross-country ability was intended to perform transport and technological functions.
Outwardly, the model almost repeated the Ural 4320. The classic cab with an elongated bonnet, a durable bumper, large round headlights immediately betrayed the product of the Ural Automobile Plant. The main difference was in the color scheme. The first Ural 5557 cars were equipped with an orange or gray cab. Various platforms and equipment were installed on the chassis of the model, which expanded the scope of its use. The release of the basic version ended in 2001.
In 1993, the premiere of Ural 55571 took place. Among the features of the car was an increased load capacity and heating of the body with exhaust gases. Subsequently, the model became the core of the Ural 5557 family. The car was produced with 2 variations of the dump platform: with and without a tailgate.
In 2002, the Ural 55571-44 model debuted at the Russian Motor Show with a new format cabin made using IVECO technology. The car embodied the image of the Ural Mountains. The appearance of the novelty immediately caught the eye. The model received a solid windshield with improved visibility, modern-shaped mirrors and new brackets. However, Ural 55571-44 borrowed most of the elements from older versions. So, the upper part of the hood has not changed much. Access to the motors was carried out in the same way - through the upper part of the hood, opened by the "crocodile". There were no steps to facilitate access to the engine. In essence, the Ural 55571-44 turned out to be a slightly modernized copy of the Ural 55571 version with an increased base. The greatest changes have occurred in the line of units. All trucks were equipped with new YaMZ engines corresponding to the Euro-2 class.
In 2014, the Ural Plant presented a pre-production version of a new generation of the model (Ural-55571-72M). The car received a cab made in the style of GAZelle Next. A year later, serial production of Ural-5557-6121-74 (Ural Next family) began. The appearance and design of the model have been completely redesigned. At the same time, the production of the 55571-44 series continued.
Scope of application
The scope of the Ural 5557 models is very wide. If the first dump truck models were intended exclusively for agriculture, then subsequently various equipment began to be produced on this chassis. The most common modifications remain dump trucks with rear unloading. They are used in public utilities, on construction sites, in the development of deposits. Versions with 2-sided unloading are intended for the transport of bulk and bulk cargo and are in demand in industry and agriculture. Models with three-way dumping are convenient in difficult terrain and in tight spaces.
On the basis of Ural 5557, tankers, truck cranes, road and communal services, construction equipment, tankers, mobile workshops, fire brigades and vans are also produced. All models of the family are distinguished by high cross-country ability and reliability.

These diesels have a V-shaped arrangement of cylinders, liquid cooling, turbocharging and intercooling of the charge air. The motors comply with the Euro-2 environmental class. A feature of the fuel system is the lack of fuel heating from antifreeze passing through the cooling system.
Some versions of the Ural 5557 are equipped with more modern YaMZ-536, YaMZ-353622 and YaMZ-65654 units that meet Euro-4 requirements.
Major modifications
For more than thirty years of operation, in addition to the basic model, Ural-5557 cars were also produced in various versions. This is the base chassis "5557-1151-40", on which various equipment is installed, and a car with a two-door cab with a sleeper "55571-1551-44", and an all-terrain vehicle with a comfortable large-capacity cab and a sprung seat with modification numbers 1-48 , 58 and 59.
The specialists of the plant continue to work on the car "Ural-5557".
The technical characteristics of cars with indexes 60, 70 and 80 and new YaMZ-536, YaMZ-65654 and YaMZ-353622 engines pass according to the modern Euro-4 standard.
The truck crane KS-55713-3K, installed on the base chassis, has become a classic.
For the internal troops of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation, an armored special vehicle "Federal-42590" was created on the chassis "5557-1". It has powerful engines, high cross-country ability and high load capacity. This special vehicle can withstand explosions up to 6 kg of TNT.
Device
Ural 5557 was created for agriculture. Initially, the model was produced in the form of a chassis with a classic 3-seater cabin without a sleeping bag. A dump platform was mounted on it, after which additional equipment was installed. The chassis itself was made of durable materials and had high reliability. The platform was fastened by means of quick couplings. Unloading could be carried out in both directions. The tilting of the side during lifting was automatic, the closing was carried out using hydraulic cylinders controlled from the cab. Also, extension boards with automatic closing and opening and a visor were installed on the platform. They were intended for a more complete use of the body (helped in the transportation of agricultural products with a small specific gravity). Thanks to the visor, the loss of cargo during unloading was reduced. The platform was controlled by a complex hydraulic system, including a 3-stage telescopic cylinder, a tank, a distribution unit and a hydraulic cylinder for raising the side. It allowed to control not only the platform, but also the trailer. Electropneumatics formed the basis for hydraulic control.
To increase the cross-country ability, tires with a wide and low profile were installed on the car. Another feature was the centralized adjustment of tire pressure. Due to this, the Ural 5557 confidently moved through water obstacles, rode on ice, swamp, snow and off-road.
The truck was equipped with a dependent spring front suspension with 2-way shock absorbers. The rear suspension was dependent on semi-elliptical springs with shock absorbers and sprung suspension.
Braking was performed by a 2-circuit pneumohydraulic brake system. Through it, separate braking of the rear and front axles was performed.
The base for the car was a reliable 5-speed manual transmission. The car could carry a fairly large load. Similar indicators were achieved through the use of a 2-disc clutch in the transmission. Operational characteristics were also improved due to a double unified final drive and a 2-speed transfer case. Properly chosen gear ratios of the gearbox made it possible, if necessary, to move at a speed of 2 km/h without interruptions in operation.
In addition to the standard cab, other options were offered. Due to the high placement and good visibility, an acceptable level of driving comfort was achieved. At the same time, the interior of the car was borrowed from the Ural 4320 model. A similar dashboard, shelves for things, sensors and indicators appeared inside.
The design of the Ural 5557 was repeatedly upgraded. Minor updates are still going on. New versions retain the advantages of the original model, including:
- high traction characteristics in difficult road and field conditions;
- the ability to operate at temperatures from -45 to +45 degrees;
- the presence of an alternator with a contactless voltage regulator and a rectifier unit, which is characterized by an increased service life;
- high level of patency without a strong destructive effect on the soil;
- unification of most units and assemblies, reducing the cost of production, use and maintenance.
