Car history
Since 1962, the Likhachev Plant in Moscow has been producing a truck for the national economy under the ZIL-130 brand. The truck was extremely popular and practical, but inferior to its classmates due to high fuel consumption. In the late seventies, the plant began developing a more economical model with a diesel engine. Namely, in the 70s, the designers of the Likhachev plant received the task of developing two advanced trucks with different payloads.
Models were supposed to run on diesel fuel. Initially, the car was designed by ZIL specialists, but after the design was created, the documentation was transferred to Naberezhnye Chelny. In 1986, the first ZIL-4331 began to roll off the assembly line. It was this model that was intended to replace the ZIL-130. Shortly after the launch of the project, the debut version of this model was presented with a double cab, as well as a chassis designed for special vehicles. Later, specialists from the Likhachev plant created a racing version of the truck, which resembled the original only in appearance.
is it possible to put a yamz-236 and even with a turbine on a zil-4331
Questions can only be asked after registration. Please login or register.
please tell me how to properly install the yamz-236 engine with a turbine on the zil-4331 and is it possible, and what is needed for this
Has no one done something like this?
The turbine is not needed there. To transfer the received power, the rear axle gearbox is still “not enough”.
but how will it behave with 20-23 tons of cargo if with a trailer?
To do this, you need to put a RABO bridge. Strengthen the rear springs. For a trailer - 12-15 tons. And the checkpoint is necessary with a divider. Very desirable.

I read somewhere on the Internet that yamz-236A was installed on zil-541730 truck tractors, but since 1999 they began to install yamz-236NE with a power of 230hp. therefore the gearbox can withstand this power

I saw these, but only with slave bridges. Rubber-300/508. I also saw with YaMZ-238. KPP - YaMZ 8-mortar. The ZiLovsky bridge is not bad, but still rather weak. Notice there are 2 of them on the ZIL-133GYA and people complain about them, they try to replace them with KAMAZ
it seems to me that in most cases they are changed due to the scarcity of spare parts, but about the Rabovsky bridge, I agree with you
An interesting topic is also going to put yamz on 4331, but so far there is not enough time.
they advise to put it without a turbine, but I want it to be more powerful
Turbine is an extra hemorrhagic. YaMZ236 is a very reliable internal combustion engine, and with a turbine, the engine will have much more wear.

what work will be performed by zil

Purpose
The main area of application of ZIL-4331 was regional transportation over short distances. The car is distinguished by reliability, ease of maintenance and repair, as well as low operating costs. It can be safely called a "workhorse" for various industries, agriculture, logging industry and housing and communal services. The machine feels confident on viscous soils and steep climbs. The car proved to be excellent not only in various climatic zones of Russia, but also in subtropical and tropical climates. ZIL-4331 is equally reliable both on flat terrain and high mountainous areas. In Russia and countries near and far abroad, about one and a half million ZIL-4331 units are operated.

Engine
It is ZIL-4331 that is considered the founder of the first Russian line of trucks with diesel power plants. The fuel consumption of ZIL 4331 is from 18 l / 100 kilometers. If we talk about a road train, then its consumption already starts at 25 liters per hundred. It is extremely rare, but still, you can find gasoline engines on trucks of the 4331 model. When operating a car with gasoline engines, consumption is approximately 30-36 liters per 100 km at a speed of 90-95 km/h and may vary depending on the load.
Transmission
The truck is equipped with rear axle drive. It has a single disc clutch with peripheral springs. We also note that the clutch release drive is equipped with a pneumohydraulic amplifier.

ZIL-4331: description and specifications
One of the most common dump trucks today is the ZIL-4331.
It has a fairly good cross-country ability, high load capacity, maintainability, as well as many other advantages. Also, its cost is a compromise relative to many similar trucks.
The most common is the ZIL-4331, equipped with the ZIL-645 engine. The most common diesel is used as fuel for this motor.
ZIL-645 is unpretentious and will work with pleasure on any diesel fuel. Its working and technical parameters are quite impressive:
- working volume - 8.74 l;
- the maximum possible power at 2,800 rpm is 185 hp. With.;
- the maximum possible torque on the motor shaft is 510 N × m (at 1,500-1,700 rpm);
- number of working cylinders - 8 pcs.;
- the arrangement of the cylinders is V-shaped;
- number of valves (two for each cylinder) - 16 pcs.;
- number of cycles in one working cycle – 4.
At the moment, the diesel engine model 645 is not available, but you can still buy all the necessary components and parts for repairing a power plant of this type.
And here you will find the main technical characteristics of the MAZ-4370 truck.
Overall and weight characteristics
The car is relatively compact, its dimensions today allow it to be used in urban conditions - most road structures will not become an obstacle in the way of this truck:
- total length from front to rear bumper - 6,370 mm;
- body width from the axis of the left rear-view mirror to the right one - 2,500 mm;
- the height from the tread to the marker lights on the roof is 2,655 mm.
The wheelbase is also quite short for a car of this format:
- the distance between the front wheels is 1,930 mm;
- between the rear - 1,850 mm.
Ground clearance can please even the most demanding drivers and those who transport on extremely undeveloped roads: its value is as much as 330 mm. The average track width is 1,930 mm.
The mass of the car itself is 4,820 kg (excluding filling fluids). The maximum load that the ZIL-4331 can carry is 6,000 kg.
Thus, this truck cannot seriously compete with foreign counterparts due to the rather high fuel consumption and low payload. But the ease of repair and low cost makes the car in question extremely popular.
The total mass of the ZIL with a full load and filling fluids is approximately 11,700 kg. Such a weight will be able to withstand most of the various bridges and other similar utilities on the roads.
Technical characteristics of gasoline engines of the ZIL-4331 dump truck
Quite often you can find the truck in question, equipped with a gasoline engine. There are two modifications of gasoline engines for ZIL-4331:
The ZIL-508.10 power plant began to be produced much later than the 645th engine.
The new gasoline unit had more flexible performance. First of all, this was expressed by large angular rolls, which the installation was able to carry without consequences.
The working parameters of the ZIL-508.10 were also more impressive:
- motor type - V-shaped, overhead valve. The cylinders are arranged relative to each other at an angle of 90 degrees;
- the total number of cylinders is 8, the number of valves is 16;
- total working volume of the combustion chamber - 6 l;
- maximum power at 3,200 rpm - 150 liters. With.;
- the total weight of the engine with all additional equipment is 640 kg.
To date, this model has been discontinued.
The ZIL-508.300 engine is the smallest engine of all installed on a truck of this type. It has the following performance features:
- working volume of the combustion chamber - 6 l;
- the maximum possible power at 3,200 rpm is 135 hp. With.;
- maximum torque at 2,000 rpm - 377 N × m;
- total number of cylinders - 8 pcs.;
- the cylinders are arranged in a V-shape at an angle of 90 degrees to each other.
Fuel consumption when operating a car with gasoline engines is approximately 30-36 liters per 100 km at a speed of 90-95 km/h and may vary depending on the load.
In the absence of cargo:
- at a speed of 60 km / h - 18 l;
- at a speed of 80 km / h - 23 liters.
If the ZIL-4331 moves as part of a road train, then the fuel consumption is somewhat different:
- at a speed of 60 km / h - 25 l;
- at a speed of 80 km / h - 32 liters.
ZIL-4331 can be equipped with engines and other modifications, but they are much less common.
Cabin and body
First of all, the appearance of the cabin has changed. She acquired angular, clearly marked outlines without smooth transitions. The body is completely made of metal, has a common base. However, its layout is not quite standard. The main difference is that the fenders, hood and front grille are made from a single rigid piece. Access to the engine is provided by lifting this structure up and forward on hinges that are attached to the vehicle's power frame behind the front bumper. At the same time, it became very convenient to repair the engine, access is opened to all engine systems. Over time, this method was abolished due to some inconvenience in operation.
In subsequent versions of the model, the hood opens in the usual "alligator" way. A new front bumper is installed on the front of the ZIL-4331 truck, in which headlights and turn signals are mounted. Moreover, structurally they are located in such a way that there is the least danger of damage in case of an accidental collision. Inside, the cabin has become more comfortable. The comfortable driver's seat is sprung and has adjustments in all directions. Two passengers can sit side by side. The middle seat rises to form a table. A large cab glass area and side mirrors allow you to fully control the traffic situation. The cab of the ZIL model "4331" is equipped with excellent heat and sound insulation, which allows you to talk inside the truck without raising your voice, and also not to experience inconvenience due to cold weather. There are three seats, one of them is the driver's seat. One of the most popular was the modification with a berth, which appeared in the early 90s.
The model received a universal "skirt" of the bumper, fairings on the sides of the body and a dragfoiler mounted on the roof. ZIL-4331, in comparison with foreign counterparts, stood out at a much lower cost. In addition to the cabin, designed for three people, a version with a 2-row cab version with 7 seats was also produced. The ZIL-4331 onboard body is a wooden platform with metal transverse base bars, with folding rear and side boards. The body structure provides for the possibility of installing extension boards and an awning with a frame.
Common problems and issues
When planning to buy a 645 ZIL engine, you need to familiarize yourself with the typical malfunctions and problems that are characteristic of this modification. If you study the reviews of the owners of this unit, the most common problem seems to be finding suitable spare parts. They are relatively rare, and their cost is much higher than the nominal values.
Nevertheless, if maintenance is carried out regularly and in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations, the D 645 engine shows stable operation and rarely fails.
The most common problems with the model are:
- piston group defects;
- fuel pump failure;
- overheating / overcooling of the engine.
Also, owners often face the need to repair the crank group.
Even though each breakdown is unique and can be caused by different reasons, it is worthwhile to study the most common problems in more detail.

Piston group repair
One of the most serious breakdowns that require painstaking elimination is the wear of the engine cylinders and pistons. During the work, the master can replace the sleeve of only one of the cylinders of the power unit, provided that the rest do not have signs of serious wear.
When repairing 645 ZIL of this kind, it should be remembered that:
- sleeves that are supposed to be replaced must be divided by size;
- the size of the pistons to be replaced must fully comply with the dismantled counterparts;
- The bottom cover of the connecting rod as well as the bearings are not interchangeable and must be replaced with the appropriate kits.
In a serviceable engine, the piston rings should move effortlessly in special grooves, and the ring locks should be moved apart.
Fuel pump failure
If the vehicle accelerates unevenly during operation, one of the reasons may be a malfunction of the fuel pump. You can check this assembly for faults visually by examining its parts for characteristic signs of wear - damage, corrosion. This can be done using a hatch or a specialized stand.
Fuel pump
Most of the problems associated with the fuel pump of this model can be resolved by installing new delivery valves, as well as selecting suitable springs for them. In addition, malfunctions can be caused by incorrect pump settings, which should be corrected by moving the screws that regulate the fuel supply.
Overheating/subcooling
Problems such as overheating and hypothermia of the power unit can lead to serious problems. If the temperature is higher than the recommended values, the piston group is subjected to increased stress, resulting in increased wear, carbon deposits and other problems.
At low temperatures, the unit consumes more fuel, resin enters the ventilation system, and the piston group is also subjected to increased stress. The lack of power of the cooling system can be caused by a lack of the appropriate fluid, a malfunction in the fan belt, or incorrect thermostat operation.

Hypothermia is observed only in case of malfunctions associated with the thermostat or in those cases when, when the engine is running, its “blinds” are always open.

Most popular modification
We are talking about " ZIL-4333 ". The shortened base was produced in the form of a truck and was equipped with three different engines: ZIL-645; ZIL-508.10 and ZIL-508.300. Certain changes added a prefix to the main index.
The appearance and device was similar to the basic variation, only the length was not 6,370 mm, but 3,800 mm. These models have gained their popularity due to the practicality of the sizes. It is more convenient to maneuver in city traffic in a shorter car, and deliver cargo faster. Thanks to this, diesel variations 433302, 433360, 433362 are still produced.
Features and operation
The popularity of the ZIL-4331 is largely due to its high reliability and simplicity of design. Even in the first models, the car received a spacious sprung cab with good visibility. Initially, the radiator grille, fenders and hood rose at the same time, providing access to engine components and systems. However, in the event of a frame distortion or an accident, it became impossible to open the hood. This forced the designers to change the location of the engine attachments, and return to the more familiar scheme of the so-called "alligator" opening of the hood.
A distinctive feature of the ZIL-4331 are headlights, side lights and direction indicators mounted in the bumper. The front part of the cab received a radiator grill made of plastic, which was a new solution for ZIL trucks. The cabin trim is far from outstanding, but in general, when driving inside, a low noise level is created, allowing the driver and passenger to communicate without raising their voices.
The car is designed for operation in domestic conditions, so there are no problems with fuel and lubricants and consumables. In addition, both domestic rubber and foreign-made tires of appropriate sizes can be used.
