NefAZ-5299 is a large-class Russian bus manufactured by the Neftekamsk Automobile Plant. It is produced in high-floor (since 2000), partially low-floor (since 2004), completely low-floor (since 2011) versions of urban, suburban and intercity buses with diesel and gas engines, as well as in the form of a trolley bus (since 2008) and an electric bus (since 2012); has undergone three significant design restyling (in 2005, 2013 and 2018). It is one of the most popular city bus models in modern Russia.
History of creation
In the early 1990s, the Kama Automobile Plant put forward the idea of producing and selling buses on the KamAZ chassis. In 1993, in Naberezhnye Chelny, on the basis of the KamAZ automobile plant, the KamAZavtobusprom joint-stock company was established. The fruit of the work of this enterprise was a prototype city bus KamaAZ-5262 . However, plans for the release of this model were crossed out by a fire at the KamAZ engine plant that occurred on April 14, 1993. Nevertheless, KamAZ did not stop looking for options for the production of buses on its own chassis.
In May 1997, the automobile plant signed a cooperation agreement with the Slovenian company Avtomontaza . The signed agreement provided for the creation in Naberezhnye Chelny of production facilities for the production of KamAZ-5297 buses . It was assumed that the first 100 cars on the KamAZ chassis would be manufactured in Slovenia, and in the future, KamAZ was going to make the bodies itself (Automontaza was supposed to supply KamAZ with the necessary equipment, including the painting line). At the same time, the Tatar Republican Research and Development Fund, the administration of Kazan and Naberezhnye Chelny, together with the State Property Committee of Tatarstan, created CJSC Chelninsky Bus Plant (ChelAZ) .

The new plant developed, patented and certified the ChelAZ-5281 city 6-door bus. In 1999, ChelAZ planned to assemble 200 buses. The planned design capacity of the plant was 2,000 buses per year. ChelAZ was supposed to reach this production volume by 2000. However, the economic crisis that occurred in 1998 prevented these projects from being implemented.
Nevertheless, a few years later, the work done became the basis for the implementation of a new project - the production and sale of NefAZ-5299 buses at a subsidiary of KamAZ - the Neftekamsk Automobile Plant. The engineers of the Neftekamsk Automobile Plant located in Bashkortostan began to deal with a family of large-class buses in August 2000, when the leadership.
The enterprise, which began its work in 1977 with the manufacture of dump trucks, by that time already had experience in the production of passenger vehicles : the so-called “shifts” are glazed van bodies equipped with seats, placed on the frames of all-wheel drive trucks. And in the late 1990s, a project appeared to assemble Turkish Mercedes buses of the O325 series . But even then, the understanding came that it was more promising to acquire your own family of buses : inexpensive, unpretentious, maintainable - most adapted for operation in specific Russian conditions. As a base for them, a special bus chassis was chosen, developed in 1997 at KamAZ (“KamAZ-5297”).
Directly to the manufacture of a prototype bus "NefAZ-5299" began on September 9, 2000. The first bus with serial number 0000001 rolled off the assembly line of the plant on December 6, 2000 and was sent to Naberezhnye Chelny, where he worked at the PAK-Invest enterprise until 2009. In 2001, 115 buses were produced and delivered to Ufa, Ishimbay, Sterlitamak, Sibay, Neftekamsk, Kumertau, Beloretsk and Oktyabrsky.

5299-10-xx (high-field). Historically the first model of the plant, the serial production of which was started in 2000. It is a classic rear-engined, high-floor city bus with an all-metal frame body and three doors. The designers of the plant did not follow the prevailing trend at that time to make the back door narrower, or even single-leaf, for the sake of simplifying the design - all doorways received the same width of 1200 mm. A KamAZ diesel engine with a KamAZ gearbox was installed in the engine compartment of NefAZ-5299. Most of the appearance of the first buses was similar to the MAZ-104. 5299-30-xx (semi-low-floor). The basic urban semi-low-floor model of the plant, produced since 2007. The buses are equipped with KAMAZ or Cummins engines, and since 2010 gas-powered buses running on methane have been produced. Voith Diwa automatic transmissions are installed.
The buses are equipped with a spacious interior with three double-leaf passenger side doors. The cabin has 115 seats for passengers , 25 of which are for seating, it is possible to accommodate a wheelchair, and the middle doorway is equipped with a ramp. The cabin has three electric ceiling hatches and five windows, two storage areas are equipped in the middle and rear parts of the cabin. Since 2010, buses with an updated interior from Naberezhnye Chelninskaya have also been produced, similar to LiAZ-5292; the front door opens completely into the saloon. It was not possible to realize these intentions then, but the work done was not in vain, becoming the basis for a more rational project: buses (see table) are now produced by a subsidiary of KamAZ - the Neftekamsk dump truck plant (NefAZ), which previously dealt not only with dump trucks, but also other special equipment, as well as shift buses on the chassis of KamAZ trucks.
The base model is a large city bus NefAZ-5299-15 (Fig. 1), 11.8 m long, with a capacity of 114 people. (25 seats), which has a traditional layout with an engine in the rear overhang and three double doors on the starboard side.
The bus engine - KAMAZ-740.31-240 - is a turbocharged eight-cylinder V-shaped diesel engine with intercooled air that meets the requirements of Euro-2 standards and develops a maximum power of 169 kW (240 hp) and a torque of 932 N • m (95 .1 kgf•m). As standard, it is equipped with a preheater, which also performs the function of an autonomous interior heater. In addition to the diesel engine, the power unit includes a KamAZ-17.1600010-10 clutch with a hydraulic drive and a pneumatic booster, as well as a five-speed manual gearbox KamAZ-142 with a cable-operated shift mechanism.
Rear axle - (Bulgaria), with a differential lock and a total gear ratio of 5.08. The front and rear axles have air suspension with telescopic shock absorbers and body position regulators (front - on two pneumatic elements with one regulator, rear - on four pneumatic elements with two regulators).
Brake system - double-circuit pneumatic, with ABS (components). The parking brake is the rear brakes, driven by spring-loaded energy accumulators, the auxiliary brake is the engine brake. The function of the spare brake system is performed by the circuits of the working system duplicating each other. The steering uses an integral hydraulic booster PPT (Yugoslavia) or PBI (Germany).
The body is a welded frame made of rectangular steel pipes, sheathed with galvanized steel sheet. Hatches on the sides of the bus - aluminum; wheel arches, panels of the front and rear walls of the body - fiberglass. The bottom, wheel arches and internal cavities of the frame tubes are treated with anti-corrosion materials during the manufacturing process.
On the same chassis, in addition to the basic model, a number of modifications are produced: the suburban NefAZ-5299-16 (Fig. 2) with a two-door body, the intercity NefAZ-5299-17 (Fig. 3) and the "northern" configuration of the latter. The buses can be equipped with Voith D gearboxes or a power unit consisting of a Caterpillar 3116 diesel engine and a ZF S6-85 gearbox.
On the basis of the city bus, the automobile plant produces a modification of the NefAZ-5299-21, with an injection gas engine (with spark ignition) KamAZ-820.53-260.
This engine is an eight-cylinder V-shaped engine with a working volume of 11.76 liters, developed on the basis of a diesel engine, which, due to the high (12.5) compression ratio, made it possible to achieve efficiency in the use of gas fuel (compressed methane) that is not achievable on engines traditionally converted from gasoline ), its maximum power is 191 kW (260 hp) at n = 2200 min-1, maximum torque is 932 N • m (95 kgf • m) at n = 1500-1800 min-1;

The bus with a gas engine is similar in its parameters and characteristics to the base diesel model, but is somewhat heavier, is designed to carry only 82 passengers and has only 20 seats. Gas cylinders with a total volume of 990 liters are distributed over the bus body: four 50-liter and two 80-liter ones are placed in niches under the body floor (on the left side), and two 315-liter ones are in a special compartment along the rear wall (above the engine), on place of the five most uncomfortable passenger seats. The gas reserve in cylinders is 215 m3 (in a free state), which corresponds to a cruising range of more than 60 km (control flow - 32 m3) and is quite enough to work on urban routes. However, this is one third less than that of a diesel bus with a fuel capacity of 250 l and a consumption of 26 l/100 km.
The listed features can, of course, be considered disadvantages. However, we should not forget that they pay off both with lower fuel costs and with less environmental damage from the operation of the bus. In addition, NefAZ-5299-21 is, in fact, the first gas bus of a new generation, created on the basis of a serial body and chassis. In the future, if this direction is developed and supported by the authorities, it will obviously not be a problem to develop and launch the production of a more optimally arranged design, in which there will no longer be forced compromise solutions.
The family also provides for an intercity tourist bus - NefAZ-52991 (Fig. 4). It is “high-deck”, designed for 44 passengers, has a kitchen compartment with a refrigerator and a five-liter titanium, a dry closet, a sleeping place for a co-driver and spacious luggage compartments. Comfortable climatic conditions in the cabin are supported by two roof-mounted reversible turbofans and an SR50 SW air conditioner, as well as a DBW-300 liquid heater, an Air Top 2000 autonomous heater in the driver's cab. The cabin has a DVD player with two monitors; on the instrument panel in the driver's cab, instead of a speedometer, there is a tachograph.
The bus is equipped with a KamAZ-740.50-60 turbocharged diesel engine, which develops a maximum power of 265 kW (360 hp) and a maximum torque of 1470 N•m (156 N•m). The power unit is equipped with a German MPZ-430 clutch and a ZF 6S 1600 gearbox - mechanical, six-speed, with a cable-operated shift mechanism. Rear axle -, with a gear ratio of 3.583 and a differential lock. The rest of the chassis of this modification is similar to the base model.
Both urban and intercity NefAZ vehicles have been presented at automobile exhibitions for several years now, they are successfully supplied to many Russian regions and have proven themselves to be reliable and easy to maintain ATS. In contrast to them, the small city bus NefAZ-3299 (Fig. 5) is a new product of the enterprise, not yet known to a wide range of consumers.
The model has a gross weight of 8 tons, 23 seats, i.e. it competes with PAZ buses. Many imported components were used in the design: turbocharged four-cylinder Cummins diesel engine B 3.9 140 (displacement - 3.9 liters, power - 104.5 kW, or 140 hp, torque - 502 N • m , or 51.2 kgf • m), exhaust-type clutch MP-325 (Brazil), mechanical five-speed gearbox ZF 5S 42, steering gear C300V.713-015 (113-15) with ZF pump, brake system with ABS or " Knorr-Bremse".
Front and rear suspension - spring with hydraulic telescopic shock absorbers and anti-roll bars. The rear ends of the rear springs are made sliding.
The body, like that of the family of large buses, has a welded frame made of rectangular steel pipes and sheathed with galvanized steel sheet. The front and rear walls are made of fiberglass panels. The design of the bus echoes the design of the intercity NefAZ-52991, i.e., it is made in the same corporate style of NefAZ.
