Apparatus design
The layout of the walk-behind tractor is made according to the classical technology inherent in uniaxial MTZ machines. The machine does not have a power frame, and all components are fixed to the transmission housing. The design has less weight, but greater reliability.

Motor
As standard, 5-horsepower UD-15 engines with one cylinder and overhead valves were installed on the walk-behind tractor. The engine design is copied from the MEMZ-966 Zaporozhets model.
The working volume of the cylinder is 245 cm3. With a very modest torque of 12 N∙m, the engine produces 3600 rpm, which compensates for the lack of power by increasing the transmission ratio.
The engine runs on all types of gasoline, but when refueling with an octane rating of 92 or higher, it is necessary to reduce the volume of the combustion chamber. Fuel is supplied by a diaphragm-type fuel pump driven by a camshaft.
The stores now do not sell the UD15 motor, you can buy it used or from storage (that is, practically new). Its price largely depends on the condition and year of issue: from 3 to 16 thousand rubles.

I would not say that the engine is fuel efficient. The gas tank with a capacity of 5 liters was emptied in less than 2.5 hours of operation not at the limit operating modes. The passport data indicates the consumption of gasoline at 2 l / h or 448.8 g / kWh. With a little "conjuration" with the carburetor, I achieved savings of about 15-20% of the original figure. However, this affected the torque and throttle response of the motor.
Clutch
The walk-behind tractor is equipped with a multi-plate "wet" clutch located in the oil bath of the transmission housing. It does an excellent job of transmitting torque to the input shaft of the gearbox.
The operation of the assembly depends on the accuracy of the drive adjustment. With a weak cable tension, the device spontaneously moves even when the handle is squeezed out. Otherwise, if there is no free play, the walk-behind tractor may not budge or will not develop its rated power.
Transmission
The gearbox and drive axle were made with a large margin of safety. When working at loads not exceeding the recommended ones, I had no problems with the transmission.
To maintain the performance of the unit, it is necessary to change the oil in a timely manner, as well as check its level. If leaks are detected, they are promptly eliminated by changing gaskets or cuffs.
Engine starting
In the standard version, the motor was equipped with a lever starting mechanism. But when operating the device in the cold, it can be difficult to start the engine. This happens if the walk-behind tractor was idle in the winter or the adjustment of the components is broken.

Engine
As you can understand from the name, the power of the motor installed on the walk-behind tractor is 5 horsepower. The UD-15 four-stroke gasoline engine has been produced at the Ulyanovsk Motor Plant since 1967, although the walk-behind tractor was put into production only ten years later. The motor has a very simple and reliable design, while in terms of its performance it is almost not inferior to imported analogues of that time. In view of its mass character and frequent use on various army special equipment - small pumps, power plants, starters - spare parts and consumables for it are not in short supply.
Transmission
The walk-behind tractor is equipped with a manual transmission with full manual control. The transmission has four forward gears and two reverse gears. The clutch is made according to a multi-plate scheme, lubrication is carried out by spraying gear oil from an oil bath. For better cross-country ability and greater performance, the center differential has the possibility of forced locking. The power take-off shaft departs from the gearbox at a constant speed of rotation - 1000 rpm.
Timing and carburetor maintenance
When the engine is running, it is necessary to periodically adjust the gaps between the valves and rocker arms of the gas distribution mechanism. The change in settings occurs due to the wear of the working surfaces, the general degradation of the assembly, and the weakening of the fasteners. Adjustment procedure:
- Dismantle the valve cover.
- Set the crankshaft to TDC on the compression stroke.
- A flat probe with a nominal value of 0.15 mm checks the gap. If it is within the normal range, the mechanism does not need to be adjusted.
- Loosen the locknut that secures the adjusting screw.
- Screw the regulator, setting the required clearance.
- Tighten the locknut while checking the position of the rocker arm.
- Check the correctness of the procedure. If the gap has changed when tightening the locknut, the actions are repeated taking into account the amendments.
- Assemble in reverse order.
