Why does the Stihl MS 180 chainsaw not start?

What to do when pouring a candle on a chainsaw

Before heading to the service center, it would be useful to try to fix the current malfunction of pouring a candle on a chainsaw on your own. Of course, this is only relevant if there are “direct” hands, since, otherwise, it is likely to increase the cost of repair work.

Poor quality fuel

The chemical composition of low-octane gasoline includes various alcohol components. It takes more time for their complete combustion than when using high-quality fuel, respectively, this becomes the main reason for the failure of the chainsaw candle.

Unfortunately, many citizens naively believe that fuel with the inclusion of alcohol has a positive effect on gasoline consumption and acquire fuel surrogates. In some cases, efficiency does take place, however, such fuel negatively affects the chainsaw engine, reducing its service life.

Wrong start

As a rule, during the first start of the chainsaw, inexperienced men skip the “pop” with the air damper closed and continue to pull the starter. Because of this, a large amount of fuel accumulates in the combustion chamber, but there is a critical lack of air. The candle is filled with excess gasoline and there can be no talk of any spark.

clogged filter

Due to the severe contamination of the paper filter of the chainsaw, a sufficient amount of oxygen does not enter the fuel chamber. The fuel mixture does not have time to ignite and gasoline fills the candle. If the filter has already exhausted its resource (this will be noticeable by its appearance), then it must be replaced. If there is no new filter at hand, but it is still necessary to work, then you can try to blow the filter with reverse air flow.

Chainsaws of various manufacturers and model ranges differ from each other. To clean or change the filter, it will be useful to first look at the instruction manual. Well, or look there if you can’t remove the filter without prompts.

Ignition system failure

Perhaps this is one of the most difficult problems that will need to be overcome in order to continue using the chainsaw. There can also be several reasons for the appearance of a malfunction here.

Incorrect clearance

For the most part, the gap on the chainsaw spark plug should be in the range of 0.5 - 1.2 millimeters (more accurate data should be reflected in the user manual). In order to check if this is the case, you need to do the following:

  1. Using a screwdriver or special keys, the bolts securing the chainsaw cover are unscrewed.
  2. Having gained access to the flywheel and magnetic circuit, the clearance level is checked.
  3. If it does not meet the specifications declared by the manufacturers, then with the help of a special gasket or improvised means (an ordinary A4 sheet folded several times is perfect), the required distance is set.

Ignition coil problem

To make sure that the ignition coil is working, you must be able to use a multimeter. This device allows you to measure the degree of resistance of the coil. A good coil will have resistance. In a burnt one - a break or a short circuit.

If the coil is good, then the gap between the coil and the flywheel may be broken. To set it up, you need to follow a few simple steps:

  1. Dismantling the saw body and loosening the bolts on which the ignition system is fixed. To the coil itself, you need to bring a magnet (magneto) of the flywheel.
  2. The adjustment plate is inserted between the flywheel magneto and the coil itself. The gap should be within 0.2 mm.
  3. After tightening the bolts, the adjustment plate is removed.
  4. It is absolutely necessary to turn the flywheel completely and several times (2-3 will be enough). However, it should not cling to the coil.
  5. The final stage is the assembly of the chainsaw body.

Carburetor adjustment failure

Often a candle on a chainsaw is flooded due to improper operation of the carburetor. For more clarity, we recommend watching this video

If this is your first time tuning a carburetor yourself, then pay attention to the following factors:

  1. The presence of built-in compensators and other elements of automatic control makes it impossible to adjust without special equipment. In this regard, you will have to contact a specialized service center.
  2. In the absence of the desired effect from the adjustment of the carburetor, the cause of the filling of the candle will be the hanging of the float or the lack of tightness of the valve.

Chainsaw chain problems

In addition to problems with the engine, the chainsaw may have problems in operation due to a malfunction of the cutting (sawing) assembly, which consists of an oil pump, bar and saw chain.

Tire not getting oil

Usually, if oil is not supplied to the chainsaw chain, it is necessary to check the channels through which oil is supplied to the tire and clean them of dirt. If the previous steps did not find the cause of the problem, then you will have to check the oil pump. For this you need:

  • remove part of the chainsaw casing;
  • remove the clutch;
  • unscrewing 3 screws, remove the cover hiding the pump;
  • get to the worm gear, which rotates the pump shaft.

If the thread on it is worn out, then the shaft does not rotate, the pump does not work, the chain is not lubricated. A worn gear needs to be replaced. You can also pull out the oil pump itself and manually try to pump oil through it. If it does not pump, the pump should be replaced.

Chainsaw oil filter

Also, the lack of lubrication may be due to its leakage. You should check how tight the pipes coming from the oil pump are connected. If the tightness is broken, the tubes are replaced with new ones.

The chain breaks

If the chain broke during the operation of the chainsaw, then this could happen when it hit a hard object, for example, a nail. If the chain is constantly breaking, then the reasons may be as follows.

  1. Poor quality of the metal from which the saw chain is made. It is necessary to buy saws for power cutters from well-known brands.
  2. Chain overheating due to poor lubrication. As a result, the saw overheats, the properties of the metal change, and it breaks under load. A check of the entire chainsaw lubrication system is required (discussed above).

You can also learn about the causes of frequent open circuits from this video.

Chain does not turn

This trouble often haunts inexperienced chainsaw owners. They forget to release the brake after starting the engine. As a result, the chain does not spin, the brake system overheats, and the clutch mechanism fails. The problem is solved by removing the saw from the brake. If the clutch hasn't burned out, you will notice the chain spinning. Otherwise, the clutch mechanism will need to be replaced.

Chain dulls quickly

Basically, the reason that the chain becomes dull quickly is the poor quality of the saw. Trying to save money on buying branded chains, chainsaw owners buy saws from unknown manufacturers, or, out of inexperience, acquire fakes for well-known brands. It is best to buy a cutting element for a gas cutter in company stores. Stihl saw chains (Calm) are very popular among the owners of this equipment.

The chain won't stop

If, when working with a chainsaw, you notice that the saw chain does not stop at the right moment, then this breakdown may have 2 options.

  1. The brake band is dirty. When the saw is operating, dirt, sawdust, dust, etc. can get under the band. As a result, the brake mechanism is blocked, and the chain does not stop when the gas is released. The problem is fixed by cleaning this node.
  2. The brake band has worn out. It is necessary to replace this element of the brake system.

Chain sticking

This happens when the drive or driven sprocket wears out. The chain usually begins to wedge under load. But without load, the saw can rotate. The photo below shows a worn chainsaw drive sprocket.

The next photo shows that the reason why the chain is wedged must be sought at the location of the driven sprocket.

But what to do if the chainsaw is completely jammed, and all attempts to pull the starter are unsuccessful? Such a malfunction is sometimes found on Chinese-made chainsaws. It is caused by bolts loosened from vibration, with which the engine is screwed to the plastic casing of the unit. These bolts are located directly under the flywheel (magneto). In the photo below, the arrows show the location of the problematic bolts.

Getting out, they begin to rub against the flywheel and can completely jam the chainsaw. The following photo shows the flywheel with the existing bolt wear.

To fix the problem, you will need to remove the flywheel from the engine shaft and tighten the bolts.

Chainsaw sawing crookedly

This problem can occur if the chain is dull or not sharpened properly. This, to a greater extent, applies to new chainsaws. But if the bar is worn out, then even after replacing the chain, you will notice that the saw is being pulled to the side. Tire wear can be easily determined by placing it on a flat table and applying a square to it, as shown in the following photo.

In this case, you can see that there is a gap of about 2 mm between the tire and the corner. It is because of this one-sided tire wear that the chainsaw cuts crookedly. The problem is solved only by replacing the tire with a new one.

What to do if a candle is flooded on a chainsaw

If you suspect a flooded candle, you need to inspect it. With the help of a candle key, it is unscrewed and carefully studied. If the candle is wet, but there is a spark, then it was definitely flooded.

Many experienced owners are able to determine the current state of a candle by its color with a high degree of probability. This procedure is recommended to be carried out regularly.

  1. Light brown soot is exactly what all owners want to see. In this case, the functionality of the chainsaw is not impaired.
  2. Black deposits indicate an unbalanced mixture, namely a lack of oxygen in the fuel chamber. If the situation does not improve, there is a high probability of re-filling the chainsaw candle.
  3. If corrosion is detected on the plug or if the distance between the electrodes is too large, then a lean fuel mixture is most likely used.

Troubleshooting Tips

If the chainsaw spark plug was still filled, and you do not want to wait until the fuel drains, there is a fairly effective and efficient cleaning method.

  1. If the repair takes place in the field, then the saw is installed on a flat surface (everything is easier in the workshop - a table to help), after that the BB wire is pulled out from the candle and the candle is taken out with the key, its candle electrodes are wiped dry. In this case, the circuit opening system must be turned on.
  2. The cover of the air filter is unscrewed, which is cleaned of dirt.
  3. After that, the control lever is set to the minimum throttle position, and the starter cord is pulled up to 10 times, but not less than 5. Thus, the combustion chamber is cleared of excess fuel.
  4. After returning the air filter, installing the spark plug and connecting the wire, you should pull the starter cord a few more times. In this case, the throttle valve must remain open.

Why chainsaw stalls when you press the gas

Let's say the chainsaw is idling normally, but when you press the gas sharply, it stalls. What could be the reason? It is immediately clear that the matter is not in the ignition (lack of spark), because if the ignition fails and there is no spark, the tool would simply not start. So that's the fuel system.

There are a lot of fuel system malfunctions, and in order to determine the exact reason why the Stihl 180 chainsaw stalls when you press the gas, it is necessary to carry out a complete diagnosis. We recommend reading about common malfunctions of the Stihl 180 chainsaw and their elimination.

Filter check

The first thing to check is the fuel filter.

In some cases, a filter clogged with dirt is unable to pass the fuel mixture through it in sufficient quantities. Accordingly, a shortage of fuel occurs in the system, which leads to the fact that when you press the gas of the chainsaw, the fuel burns out, and the new one does not have time to arrive, as a result of which the Stihl chainsaw stalls. Also, with a clogged fuel filter, there may be a noticeable drop in the power of the chainsaw at maximum speed, but this is with slight pollution.

Air filter

On the pages of the World Wide Web, you can find information that the Stihl 180 chainsaw may stall due to severe contamination of the air filter. I would like to refute this not entirely correct information, and report that the Shtil MS 180 carburetor is equipped with a compensator, which is designed and installed in order to take in the air necessary for the normal operation of the Shtil 180 chainsaw, bypassing a contaminated air filter. Of course, the power with a clogged air filter will drop a little, but it definitely will not stall. The power may also drop due to piston wear, and repair of the Stihl MS 180 piston chainsaw will already be required.

Carburetor

One of the reasons why the chainsaw does not develop speed when you press the gas, but rather stall, is a malfunction of the carburetor. Let's say the Stihl 180 saw worked properly, and then it was put on for a long time and did not use it. After it was started, and at idle it works well, and when you press the gas it can stall. Why is it deafening? The reason is a stuck carburetor injector valve. Of course, this is not 100%, but the probability of such a malfunction is high. We recommend reading the article about the device and repair of the Stihl 180 carburetor.

In order to check the nozzle, it is necessary to remove the carburetor and disassemble it. To remove, it is necessary to unscrew the two nuts securing the air filter and the carburetor, and then remove the air filter and the engine control lever, while disconnecting the air damper control rod from the carburetor. Next, you need to slightly pull the carburetor towards you, and disconnect the fuel supply hose.

Having removed the carburetor, it must be blown and cleaned of dirt, only after that the carburetor can be untwisted.

It is necessary to unscrew the cover of the main chamber of the carburetor, this is the one on which the compensator is installed on top. Further, using a bolt of 8 mm and a length of at least 50 mm. We knock out the valve.

After the nozzle is removed, you can blow it out with a compressor. The valve should allow air to pass only in one direction, if it is possible to freely blow the valve in both directions, then it is defective and must be replaced with a new one. To assemble the chainsaw after the valve has been repaired, it is necessary in the reverse order of disassembly.

You can see clearly how the carburetor is being repaired, or rather, how to properly knock out the nozzle valve from the carburetor body by watching the video.

Another common reason why the saw may stall as the rpm increases is air leaking into the carburetor. It is possible to check this only with a special tool, but it is worth noting that if maintenance work with the carburetor has not been carried out for a long time, then a new set of gaskets can be installed in the carburetor. In some cases, this helps to solve the problem with its depressurization.

When disassembling the carburetor to replace the gaskets, you need to carefully inspect its needle valve, press the rocker and control its lifting. Sometimes, especially after the Stihl chainsaw has stood for a long time with fuel in the carburetor, the needle may burn to the carburetor body and not perform its functions. Simply put, the needle valve will not allow the fuel mixture to pass through. In this case, the saw will not work.

The Stihl 180 chainsaw does not start: the main reasons

Today, many manufacturers are engaged in the production of units for agricultural and construction work, among which the most popular is the equipment manufactured by Shtil. The high level of quality is not the only reason why the products of this manufacturer are popular in the market. This was also facilitated by the democratic price and the optimal power that the models of this brand have.

It seems that many had to use a chainsaw of a similar brand. And not just to use, but to regularly perform a wide variety of work and make sure of the high performance of this tool. Such a distribution of these products is not accidental, given that in addition to power, this tool stands out for its graceful design. However, it must be remembered that this is still a technique in which the resource of work is limited. Therefore, each owner of such a unit at some point is faced with the need for repair. Next, we will talk about the features of repairing the Stihl 180 chainsaw.

General information

The characteristics of this saw are the pride of the German manufacturer. At the same time, the unit is a tool that is designed to perform a small amount of work. The tool is positioned for domestic use, which confirms the intensity of its operation, which should not exceed 20 hours per month . Having such a unit at your disposal, it will not be difficult for you to maintain order in your garden, prepare firewood for the winter, and clear the sites. At the same time, he will be able to help you in solving other problems where there is no need to perform complex manipulations.

Main characteristics

The saw in question can be considered a compact option, because its weight is only 3.9 kg. At the same time, it has a large capacity oil and fuel tank. The device helps to perform its working functions with a two-stroke engine, the power of which is enough to solve simple tasks. In addition to this, during operation, this tool does not create strong noise, the level of which does not exceed 98 dB . For ease of understanding, it suffices to say that human speech creates noise at a level of 76 dB.

  • The Stihl 180 chainsaw has a power of 2.6 watts. In principle, this is sufficient, bearing in mind that we are talking about a tool for domestic use.
  • The capacity of the oil tank is 0.145 liters, fuel - 0.25 liters.
  • The tire provided by the design has dimensions of 350 mm, while the pitch is 0.325 inches.

Clockwork device

As with other saws, the main starting device is the carburetor. Considering in more detail the carburetor that the Stihl 180 chainsaw is equipped with, it should be noted that it has a single tuning screw. In other words, it is a kind of idle adjustment screw . In this case, the jet, which accounts for the full load, is motionless all the time.

In other words, the regulation is not applicable to him. In turn, there is no way to influence the full load in any way. You also need to pay attention to the factory settings, due to which the air-fuel mixture is supplied directly to the engine. Moreover, this principle is preserved regardless of the operating conditions of the tool.

The saw does not start: causes and solutions

  • Speaking of the saw 180, it must be said that this tool has many advantages. At the same time, this unit is not without its shortcomings. They will be given attention.
  • A common situation is in which many owners find themselves when the Stihl chainsaw does not start and fills in a candle . This is usually attributed to the formation of a leak of oil used to lubricate the chain. A similar thing happens for the reason that over time, the area where the hose of the oil pump and the oil tank is joined loses its former tightness.
  • In principle, this problem is solvable, however, in order to do everything correctly, you need to take into account the design of the chainsaw in question. By itself, this process provides for certain nuances, first of all, it is necessary to disassemble the unit, and without this it will be impossible to get to the required place.
  • For many owners of this saw, the question is why the Stihl 180 chainsaw does not start? Experts give the following recommendation in this regard: the first thing to do for those who are faced with a similar problem is to open and then close the lid located on the gas tank. There is another solution - you need to pull out the candle and let it dry. You can also create the effect of artificial ventilation for the combustion chamber. Most often, these recommendations are enough to bring the device back to working condition. However, this does not always help to restore the operation of the Stihl chainsaw.
  • If there is a spark, but attempts to start the chainsaw do not lead to anything, then in this case you need to check the supply of gasoline , air filter, and then make sure that the candle is in working order. Such manipulations must be done for the reason that most often this kind of malfunction is caused by contamination of the breather. And if a plug forms in it, then, naturally, a vacuum environment will be created in the gas tank, because of which the fuel will not flow. A similar problem can be solved quite simply, for which it is enough to remove the dirt using a needle for this.
  • Some owners are faced with such a problem when the saw itself starts up, but immediately starts to stall. Look for the reason that the saw does not start should be in the carburetor. Most likely, he managed to get clogged and therefore does not allow the tool to work correctly.
  • To make sure that the breather is not the cause of the malfunction, and it is in working condition, you must first disconnect the fuel hose from the carburetor, and then find out if there is a fuel leak.
  • Keep in mind that it is natural for a normally working chainsaw to have a dense and stable stream of gasoline . In addition, it is often possible to observe a situation where the Stihl 180 chainsaw does not start hot and immediately stalls at the same moment or after some time. Usually such a malfunction is associated with a muffler. Most likely, a lot of deposits have accumulated in it, associated with long-term operation of the tool, which is usually accompanied by the formation of emissions.
  • At the same time, the saw may stop starting if the tool chain is poorly lubricated. Channels with a plug can contribute to this, or the cause should be looked for in an oil pipeline that has a leak.
  • A serious problem can be leaks in the connecting pipes or at the installation site of the oil pump fittings.
  • There are cases when the Stihl 180 chainsaw starts to stall due to a failed cylinder. To make sure that this is actually the case, it is enough to conduct an inspection. If, as a result of the examination, you find bumps and chips, then this is a clear sign of a breakdown.

Crank saw Stihl

Those chainsaw owners who received a new tool only in the morning, unpacked it and assembled it in accordance with the instructions, but could not start it or the engine starts and immediately stalls, are especially upset. We will warn you right away - in no case do not try to disassemble the new engine and do not tear off the warranty stickers. Under such circumstances, it is best to exchange a faulty chainsaw for another, or request a warranty repair.

Chainsaw standard equipment

In accordance with the legislation of most CIS countries (including Russia and Ukraine), electric and chainsaws are subject to return, in case of detection of malfunctions not specified by the seller.

Also, the buyer can demand a reduction in the price of a defective product, reimbursement of the cost of repairing it or a refund for a defective tool. The owner of the chainsaw can present these requirements only during the warranty period, subject to all the conditions specified in the warranty card. As a rule, the buyer has 14 days to identify all faults and deficiencies and contact the seller.

We remove the cup, put the key on the hexagon of the coupling and unhook the stretched spring with a hook.

We immediately put a new one in its place - it’s easy there. We hook one hook of the spring with our fingers, and with a hook we pull the second into the hole. It will catch on, then we push it with a screwdriver so that it jumps into the hole properly.

We turn the crankshaft 1/3 of a turn, put the key on the hexagon again, hold it from turning and also change the spring to a new one. Next - the third. We put the cup in place, we work. And you can also check the condition of the springs with your fingers.

The stretched spring allows the weights to move on the crosspiece and is removed very easily. When we replace the springs with new ones, the clutch should become like a monolith and it is not possible to pull the weights with your fingers, only if you rest with a screwdriver.

Question: Is it possible to install on a Stihl MS 180 chainsaw instead of a standard 30 cm bar, 1.3 tires from the 170th to 30 cm, but with a groove of 1.1? what is the danger of such a replacement?

Answer: In my opinion, only the extra consumption of chains.

Still, 1.1 has a shorter tooth (and on some models it is much shorter), there are fewer sharpenings.

The absence of a spark between the electrodes on the spark plug is the main malfunction that creates problems with starting the Stihl chainsaw engine. To identify it, it is necessary to unscrew the candle and inspect it. If the candle is wet, you should proceed to further troubleshooting.

The location of the candle in the Stihl 180 chainsaw

To restore the operation of the saw, it does not matter the brand Ural or Shtil, you need to know the location of the breakdown.

First, we check and change the unsuitable fuel mixture. If the saw still does not start, then we check further point by point.

The problem is in the candle - we pull it out and dry it. In no case should you pierce it, because this will lead to a malfunction of the part. 30 minutes after drying, you can insert the candle back, before that, checking if there is any fuel left in its place.

Almost all tools are organized in the same way, both foreign (Husqvarna, Makita, Shtil, Partner 350) and Chinese chainsaws, as well as domestic ones (druzhba, Ural). Therefore, finding the reason why the device does not start and stop is not very difficult.

There are four elements where problems can arise:

  • Fuel for which the carburetor is responsible;
  • Lubricant;
  • Air that enters through the air filter;
  • A spark, the quality of which depends on the ignition unit.

All of them depend on each other and interact with each other. If any element does not work correctly, the saw stops working.

Let's start with the fact that all instruments are configured differently. hot and cold. Two commonly used mechanisms are responsible for this process.

Be sure to check out the user manual. It says that when you turn on, you need to make sure the emergency stop brake is engaged. But it is much more difficult to start a saw with a brake, so sometimes it is better not to apply the brake.

As you can see from the manual, there is a fuel tank and engine inside the hull and outside. saw section (tire with chain), handle and starter.

First we need to figure out exactly how the tool is not running. For example, the saw starts, but immediately catches the eye or loses the power of work, the quality cuts.

Possible interruptions occur due to problems in the engine. But I wouldn't recommend taking it apart immediately. It is better to look for the problem in the simplest way.

To restore the operation of the saw, it does not matter the brand Ural or Calm, you need to know the location of the deployment.

First, we check and change the wrong fuel mixture. If the saw still does not start, we check it further.

The problem is the candle. pull out and dry. Do not pierce it under any circumstances, as this will cause the part to malfunction. After 30 minutes of drying, you can put the spark plug back in before checking to see if any fuel is left in place.

The basis of the plant of this kind of model, as well as all other chainsaws, is the carburetor. But since we are talking today about the Stihl 180 chainsaw, we will not deviate from the topic. So. The carburetor in this model has a single adjustment screw, that is, it is a kind of idle adjustment screw. While the jet of a fully loaded load is in a stationary state.

Stihl 180 chainsaw carburetor

In simple words, we can say that it simply cannot be adjusted (see here), while the full load setting simply cannot be changed. It is also important that the carburetor itself at the factory was set up in such a way that, regardless of the actual conditions under which the chainsaw is directly operated, the air-fuel mixture is supplied to the engine itself.

The piston does not match the cylinder.

The first and most common cause of this malfunction is incorrect carburetor adjustment. You can adjust the idle speed yourself, for this you need to have a Stihl adjusting screwdriver, which comes with the unit. The adjustment hole is located on the right side of the Stihl 180 saw on the handle and is marked with the symbols "-" and "".

If the Stihl chainsaw does not keep speed and stalls at idle, you can be almost 90% sure that it has a malfunction in the fuel pump operation system, as a rule, this is air leakage into the crankcase through the pan gasket, or, much more often, through the seals crankshaft. Air leakage reduces or even completely stops the impulse that is supplied through special channels to the fuel pump of the chainsaw. As a result of this, the Stihl 180 chainsaw does not receive the required amount of fuel and stalls at idle.

Diagnosis can be carried out using a special device called a vacuum gauge.

Very often you can hear the question of why the chainsaw stalls at full speed. There may be several reasons. First, you need to consider exactly how the saw stalled. Suppose the tool worked normally and suddenly, for no apparent reason, it abruptly stalled and the starter does not turn. In such a situation, you can be 100% sure that the chainsaw is jammed and you need to start overhauling it.

The second situation is when the Stihl 180 chainsaw worked normally, then gradually lost power and stalled in a short time, and the cylinder overheated. In this case, the most likely cause is air leakage under the rubber pipe connecting the carburetor to the cylinder or its rupture. The mixture was lean, resulting in overheating. You can eliminate the cause by changing the pipe.

Chainsaw Stihl 180 does not start: causes and repair

And the world-famous company Stihl produces a huge range of high-quality chainsaws.
For domestic purposes and simple work, the Stihl 180 chainsaw was created, which showed excellent performance and reliability. All the best developments of the German company are used here, with a weight of 3.9 kg, the chainsaw easily performed work in the garden. It is easy to cut small trees, branches, you can even prepare firewood with it. But any even the highest quality equipment tends to break down, and it happens that the Stihl 180 chainsaw does not start or starts with great difficulty. We tried to collect all the reasons and methods for repairing the German Stihl 180. If you are the owner of the Stihl 180 chainsaw or want to purchase it, we offer our detailed review and characteristics of the Stihl 180.

No spark

If the chainsaw does not start, and you have not experienced any particular difficulties before, first of all we check the spark plug. There may simply be no spark between its electrodes, this can only be determined after removing the candle. We check its performance, for this we stick the candle into the cap of the high-voltage wire, put the candle on the cylinder (or other metal object) with the metal side. Now we do several manipulations with the starter, and if no spark is observed during them, the problem is specifically in the spark plug.

Attention : be sure to make sure that the ignition is on, otherwise the candle will not show a spark in any case. Also, to make sure that the spark plug is faulty, and not the ignition coil, take a similar spark plug and check the spark on it. If it is present, the problem is solved by a simple replacement.

Ignition coil failure

Repair of the ignition coil is impossible, its design is not disassembled. But you can check the performance of the part only with a special device. If there is no spark in the candle, you do not need to immediately blame the ignition coil, run diagnostics. Some mistakenly run to the store for a new coil, so first check for a breakdown, and then make a new purchase.

Fuel supply to the chainsaw

If Calm 180 does not start, there is a spark, then first of all we check the presence of fuel in the chainsaw tank. Of course, the problem is funny, but quite common. Next, we check whether fuel enters the carburetor, for this you can disconnect the gasoline hose from the carburetor and pump gasoline. After several manipulations with the hose, gasoline should flow, but not in a large stream, but in small jerks. If there is no gas flow or it is weak, the problem may be as follows:

Flushing the carburetor and checking the condition of the jets

If a stable start is not established during the work performed, we are looking for a malfunction in the carburetor. In the absence of proper disassembly experience, it should be entrusted to an experienced specialist.

The cause of a difficult start may be, in addition to the previously mentioned air leaks:

  • jet pollution;
  • Water ingress into the float chamber and depressurization of the float itself;
  • Weak fit of the float valve, which stabilizes the fuel level in the carburetor;
  • Filling the fuel system with a fuel surrogate or mixture with an expiration date.

Serious malfunctions blocking a standard start, such as air leakage through worn crankshaft end seals, a change in the ignition angle due to the lack of appropriate tools and technological equipment, are eliminated in repair shops.

Other causes and solutions

If the chainsaw still does not start and the reason is not in the above details, you need to look deeper. Other common faults include:

Fuel pump failure;

O lack of impulse in the pipe channel from the engine crankcase;

There is no fuel supply from the carburetor;

Rupture of the membrane on the fuel pump;

Repair of the above malfunctions can be carried out either independently, but of course it is better to give the chainsaw to the master, you can do the diagnostics yourself. Also, when diagnosing, you should check the following indicators:

Correct operation of the carburetor;

Optimum compression in the cylinder;

Compression in the crankcase.

Compression is checked both with a special device and manually. To "by eye" make sure that there is compression, it is enough to remove the candle and insert a finger into the cylinder hole. After several times, scroll the starter and if the finger pulls into the hole, there is compression.

  • Watch the quality of gasoline and oil, on the basis of which you prepare the fuel mixture. Stick to the right proportions while doing this;
  • Do not use fuel prepared more than two weeks ago. Regularly check and clean the tanks for gasoline and oil, otherwise the engine will stall or the saw will not start at all;

Chainsaw chain maintenance

  • Clean the air filter regularly. It has a simple device and this operation will not require much effort from you;
  • Turn the bar over every time after the next sharpening of the chain - this way you will extend the life of the saw set;
  • Regularly check and thoroughly clean the oil inlet and outlet holes, the oil passage and the guide bar groove. Remember that if the automatic lubrication system fails, your saw will start or stall;

Your main assistant should be the instruction manual. If you have lost it, you can contact the dealer of the company whose chainsaw you are using, they will provide you with instructions in electronic form.

So, before turning on the gasoline chain saw, be sure to make sure the chain is in good condition, whether its teeth are sharpened, whether it is well stretched (does not sag, but not too tight, it can be slightly pulled away from the blade).

You can sharpen the chain using a special machine or a file with a special template (depending on the chain tooth pitch, there are different templates).

Each time after use, the chainsaw must be cleaned: the chain, tire, air filter, housing, cooling fins, slots and other grooves are cleaned of sawdust. After using the saw, turn the tire over so that it wears evenly, lubricate the sprocket (if there are grooves for lubrication in the front of the saw).

When storing for a long time, be sure to drain the fuel and oil! The chain and bar form an electrochemical couple, so they rust together and must be stored separately.

Stihl 180 Chainsaw Won't Start Pouring a Candle

Household and professional chainsaws have a simple design and reliable, two-stroke internal combustion engines. Most of the drive failure is due to fuel system malfunctions. Why light a candle on a chainsaw and how to fix it yourself?

The components of the entire line of gasoline powertrains run on a precisely metered mixture of fuel and special engine oil designed for two-stroke engines.

In the carburetor, fuel and air are mixed in a ratio of 1:16, after which the air-gas emulsion is fed into the combustion chamber.

Consequences of engine operation with untuned fuel equipment

The traction characteristics of the engine and its life expectancy depend on the composition of the mixture.

  • Running on a lean mixture causes a drop in power, overheating of the cylinder and intensive wear of parts and components of the chainsaw.
  • No less dangerous is work on a saturated mixture. The malfunction manifests itself in an increase in the time to reach operating speed, an increase in fuel consumption, and smoke from the muffler.
  • There is also an intensive formation of soot in the combustion chamber, loss of mobility of the piston rings.
