Chainsaw carburetor device
Most modern chainsaws are equipped with almost identical carburetors. They practically do not differ from each other, and work on a similar principle. The only difference between cameras from different manufacturers is the material from which they are made. In expensive American, Swedish and German-made chainsaws, the chambers are made of reliable alloys, which are coated with protective coatings. Cheap Chinese and Korean chainsaws are equipped with units made from cheap materials.
Each carburetor consists of the following elements:
- aluminum housing with one-piece construction. Inside the housing there is an inlet fitting, a main screw, an impulse channel, a bolt for adjusting the engine when idling;
- throttle valve - it is responsible for adjusting the amount of air required to enrich the fuel mixture;
- diffuser - located next to the inlet of the chamber;
- atomizer - designed to supply the fuel mixture directly to the carburetor chamber;
- float chamber - there is a float in it, which works in case of insufficient amount of fuel;
- jets - are valves that are responsible for adjusting the amount of fuel.
This chainsaw carburetor circuit is as simple and effective as possible. In some models of garden tools, it can be supplemented with additional nozzles, seals or filters.
The principle of operation of a chainsaw carburetor is quite simple. When the engine starts, the air damper located at the bottom of the housing opens. In this case, a vacuum is formed in the float and air chambers caused by the movement of the piston. As a result of this, a standard diffuser is activated, which begins to suck in air. The amount of air taken in depends on how open the damper is. When the piston is actuated, fuel begins to flow into the chamber through the inlet fitting. Its quantity and flow rate depend on the position of the jets.
Subsequently, the fuel in the air chamber begins to mix with air. After that, the finished air-fuel mixture passes through the intake valves, from where it is directed to the combustion chamber of the saw engine.

Setting up a chainsaw carburetor with your own hands
For an independent carburetor option, it is necessary to familiarize yourself with its device and understand the procedure for the work that is carried out to adjust the parts responsible for the correct functioning of the components of the device and parts close to it.
It is necessary to carefully handle the items for the system option, and also determine the compliance of the set characteristics with very acceptable values.
About the carburetor device
The carburetor serves to mix the combustible mixture with air, subject to predetermined proportions. If clear doses are not observed, the correct operation of the motor is at risk. When a huge amount of air enters during mixing, and there is not enough fuel, then such a mixture is considered “poor”.
Oversaturation should not be allowed, because with a large amount of fuel compared to air, malfunctions or engine wear are also likely. Carburetor adjustment is needed not only before the initial implementation, but also when any differences in its operation are detected. Before you start working with a chainsaw, do not forget to break it in.
Components of a carburetor
The design of the carburetor contains a standard set of parts, but may vary slightly depending on the manufacturer. Components:
- Basis . This is a special tube that visually resembles an aerodynamic design. Air passes through it. A damper is located in the transverse direction in the middle of the pipe. Its position can be changed. The more it is extended into the passage, the less air enters the engine.
- diffuser . This is the narrowed part of the tube. With its help, the air supply speed is increased precisely in the segment where the fuel comes from.
- Channels for fuel supply. The fuel mixture is contained in the float chamber, then passes into the jet, from which it flows into the atomizer.
- float chamber . It is a separate structural element, reminiscent of the shape of the tank. It is designed to constantly maintain the optimum level of the fuel fluid before entering the channel from which air enters.

What you need to have to set up
Each owner of a carburetor should have the necessary tools to make adjustments to this system. There are three adjustment screws that are located on the body of the device. They have their own markings:
- L - screw for correcting low speed.
- H - screw for adjusting high speed.
- T - regulates idling, in most cases it is used for experiments.

READ Why Chainsaw Heats Up Quickly
Before adjusting the carburetor, you need to prepare the device:
- The engine warms up, that is, it starts up about 10 minutes before repair, and turns off at the start of work (see how to start a chainsaw).
- Check and clean the air filter.
- The chain is stopped by turning screw T as far as it will go (see chain oil).
To carry out a safe repair, you need to prepare a flat surface where you can carefully position the device, and turn the chain in the opposite direction. You need a tachometer. It determines the presence of a violation in the operation of the carburetor. When turning the screws, the sound should be perfect and absolutely even. If squealing notes are noticed, then the mixture is oversaturated.
Setting instructions
Carburetor adjustment is divided into two main stages. The first is called basic. It is done with the engine running. The second is performed when the engine is warm.
In order to carry out the carburetor tuning procedure successfully, you need to familiarize yourself with the operating instructions for a specific model in advance to identify additional features of setting up the device.
First stage
The adjustment screws for the highest and lowest speeds should be turned clockwise until the highest resistance is met. When the screws reach the stop, you need to move them in the opposite direction and leave when passing 1.5 turns.

HOW TO ADJUST THE CARBURETTOR ON YOUR CHAINSAW CORRECTLY//Stihl
In this video we will answer the question of how to set up
or adjust
the chainsaw carburetor
with your own hands
The engine turns on at medium speed and warms up for about 10 minutes. The screw responsible for adjusting the idle speed must move clockwise. It is released only when the engine enters the stable operation mode. It is necessary to check that the chain does not move during this process.
In idle mode, the engine may stall (the reason is here). In this case, you must immediately bring the adjusting screw clockwise to the stop. Sometimes the chain starts to move. In this case, turn the adjusting screw in the opposite direction.
Checking the operation of acceleration
You need to do a little research. Device acceleration is initiated. It is necessary to evaluate the serviceability of the engine during the maximum speed. When the engine is functioning correctly, when you press the accelerator, the speed quickly increases to 15,000 rpm.
If this does not happen or the increase in speed is too slow, the screw marked L must be used. It turns counterclockwise. Moderate movements must be observed, since the turn cannot be more than 1/8 of a full circle.
READ Saw Oil/Gasoline Ratio
Max RPM
To limit this figure, you need to use a screw marked H. To increase the number of revolutions, turn it clockwise, and to reduce them in the opposite direction. The maximum frequency should not exceed 15000 rpm.
If this indicator is made larger, the engine of the device will wear out, which will lead to problems in the ignition system. When rotating this screw, the ignition processes of the device must be taken into account. If the slightest failures appear, then the maximum speed value must be reduced.
Final check at idle
Before this procedure, it is necessary to perform a full adjustment of the carburetor components when operating at maximum speed. Next, you should check the operation of the device in idle cold mode. When the correct parameters are achieved during adjustment, you can notice the exact compliance of the carburetor design with the following criteria:
- When the idle cold mode is connected, the chain does not move.
Chainsaw Accelerator
- When even a slight pressure on the accelerator is carried out, the engine is gaining momentum at an accelerated pace. With a gradual deepening of the pressure, you can notice that the engine speed increases commensurately, reaching the maximum allowable values.
- When the engine is running, you can compare its sound with a four-stroke device.
If violations are noticed in the given parameters or the device was not fully adjusted, you need to perform the main setup step again. Sometimes actions are performed incorrectly. In this case, the device may fail due to the loss of the correct node settings. In this case, you will have to contact a specialist.
Dismantling the carburetor if necessary to check or repair components
The device of different models of carburetors is almost the same, so when working with them, you can use the standard scheme. All elements must be removed carefully, and then laid out in the order below , so that you can successfully place the items in place at the end of the repair work.
Removing the Top Cover
- The top cover is removed. To do this, unscrew the 3 bolts holding it in a circle.
- The foam rubber is also removed, as it is the upper part of the filter that conducts air.
- The fuel hose is removed.
- The drive thrust is displayed immediately on it.
- The end of the cable is disconnected.
- The petrol hose can be completely removed by systematically pulling it off the fitting.
To finally prepare the carburetor for a major overhaul or replacement of the smallest parts, you need to carefully disconnect it from the main system . Sometimes further disassembly is required. You should unscrew the components carefully and fold the fasteners in groups, as these small parts are easily lost.

Instruction for Chinese
To properly set up the carburetor of a Chinese chainsaw, you must first remember the factory settings of the device, then turn on the engine. Subsequently, you will have to leave it running for several hours in order to accurately set your own parameters. Sometimes work is done once after ten minutes of engine operation, however, many Chinese-made models require special handling.
Chinese chainsaw model
Adjustment procedure:
- Activities start in idle mode . With the help of adjusting screws, you need to achieve a systematic increase in engine speed, so you should first let it work at low speeds. The deviation from the norm is the movement of the chain along the tire. In this case, you need to adjust the outer screws to the optimal position so that the chain remains stationary.
- Transition to medium speed revolutions is carried out . Sometimes the engine will smoke. This defect can be eliminated by tightening the screw to supply a leaner fuel mixture.
In this case, the smoke will disappear, but the engine speed will increase. It is necessary to adjust the settings until it reaches a level where, when you press the throttle, the engine smoothly picks up speed, no sharp jerks or interruptions are heard.
- The engine of the device is being checked . The chainsaw is transferred to the minimum speed, and then the lever is pressed rapidly. At the maximum pressing it is maintained for 3 seconds. If there is a malfunction in the engine, you need to gradually loosen the screw until the optimum position is reached.
- The chainsaw should work for several hours in real conditions . It is necessary to engage in sawing wood, and then inspect all the elements involved in this event. If there are deviations, they must be corrected using adjusting devices. When all defects are eliminated and the optimal settings for supplying correctly concentrated fuel are set, the process of setting up the device can be considered completed.
Take a look at the video:
Conclusion
In order for the chainsaw to work properly, you need to carefully carry out the work of adjusting the carburetor in exact accordance with their order. If there are any malfunctions in the functioning of the device, you must independently perform its complete disassembly. In most cases, replacement of any parts that have become unusable is required.
With a constant check of the quality of the carburetor settings and the implementation of timely actions to improve its operation, there are no problems with the chainsaw.

Chainsaw carburetor adjustment - what a beginner needs to know?
Initially, all adjusting bolts are in the factory positions - this guarantees the suction of the optimal amount of fuel and air. However, due to prolonged use of the saw in difficult conditions, the factory settings of its carburetor may be violated. Even a slight shift of one of the bolts by 1/5 of a turn will lead to a serious disturbance in the operation of the saw motor. In this regard, the operator must constantly ensure that the adjusting bolts are in the optimum, factory-set positions.
If for some reason the operation of the node was disrupted, then it will need to be reconfigured. For this purpose, 3 adjusting bolts are provided in the assembly device. The first of them is marked with the letter H - it is needed to tune the chainsaw engine when operating at maximum speed. The second screw, marked L, is used to adjust the motor while it is running at low speeds. The third screw may be labeled T, S, or LA. Its task is to tune the internal combustion engine when operating in idle mode.
Chainsaw carburetor tuning must be carried out with a fully serviceable engine. Immediately before adjustment, you will need to inspect the air filter, and, if necessary, clean it or replace it.
Situations that require customization
The new tool is already ready for work. In this regard, for some time the question of how to set up a carburetor on a chainsaw will not arise. However, experienced owners of the unit often fine-tune. To do this, it is absolutely not necessary to disassemble the carburetor, since three adjusting screws are provided in its design:
- L - used at low speeds.
- H - allows you to adjust the maximum supply of flammable liquid.
- T - necessary for idling adjustment.
All fine-tuning actions are carried out by ear, and at this time it is necessary to adhere to safety rules. Before starting all manipulations, marks should be applied to the adjusting screws so that it is easier to return to the default setting if necessary.
Most often, the problems are caused by the setting, which is carried out after a failure in the operation of the unit. Among the main reasons for their appearance should be noted:
- Unbalanced screws and violation of the location of the protective cap.
- Wear of the piston system, which requires changes in the composition of the fuel mixture.
- Problems with the operation of the carburetor itself.
How to properly adjust the carburetor on a chainsaw?
To set up the assembly, place the tool on a hard, level surface. It is best to adjust the chainsaw carburetor in a place protected from dust and moisture.
The node setup process should look like this:
- First you need to unscrew the mounting bolts and remove the protective casing of the saw. This will make it possible to inspect the carburetor and, if necessary, clean it;
- Next, you need to remove the regular air filter of the tool. If the saw is equipped with an additional foam insert, then it must also be removed;
- After that, you need a screwdriver, which you need to tighten the bolts marked H and L clockwise until they stop. This must be done very carefully so as not to break the bolts;
- Then both screws should be unscrewed 1.5 turns in the opposite direction;
- Next, you need to start the chainsaw motor and let it run for about 7 minutes;
- As soon as the engine cylinder warms up, you will need to start turning the bolt L until the internal combustion engine starts to operate at maximum speed. Immediately after this, the bolt must be turned 1/4 turn in the opposite direction;
- Then you need to adjust the operation of the motor at high speeds. To do this, you need to connect an electronic tachometer to the engine, and start turning the bolt H until the indicators on the instrument panel match the indications for the recommended maximum speed in the instructions for the saw;
- At the end, it remains to adjust the operation of the ICE saw at idle. To do this, you will need to slowly turn the bolt T counterclockwise until the motor runs stably and without dips. If the motor starts to stall, then the bolt T should be turned in the direction of the clock.
To adjust the carburetor on a chainsaw, you should work with the adjusting bolts as accurately as possible. Over tightening the screws will cause increased stress on the engine and other important parts of the garden tool.

The best information about adjusting carburetors on a chainsaw
Greetings to you dear and most faithful readers of my blog. In this article, I decided to see how to adjust the carburetor on a chainsaw. After all, it seems to me that you have often encountered a problem that your “darling” let you down when you needed it. And because we are economical and do not want to waste money on what we can do ourselves, let's learn how to adjust the carburetor on our chainsaws with our own hands, without recruiting professional repairmen. And as you'll soon see, it's quite easy to do. You don't even need to do anything special. I specifically looked at the adjustment of carburetors of all recognizable brands of saws, each of which has its own tricks and aspects, and in my opinion this is the best information on the net!
So let's get started!
What is useful for you?
- First, annotation on the operation of the device itself.
- Secondly, the tachometer. Why exactly it is useful to us, we will consider a little later.
- B-3 - a screwdriver.
Surprisingly, that's all we need.
To begin with, carefully familiarize yourself with the device of your saw. Chainsaw carburetor adjustment. Chainsaws stihl ms290 ms310 ms390 disassembly. (Calm) ms- 290 / 310 / 390. What you need to do first is to find where the carburetor jets are, and even more important than the jets are the adjusting screws. Usually, there should be two or three screws. One of them regulates idling, and the other two - low and high.

Specifically, they will need to be adjusted for you, or twisted, or unscrewed in order to enrich or deplete the fuel mixture.
If you need to lean the mixture, then simply turn the regulator clockwise, if you enrich it, then counterclockwise accordingly.
To adjust the idle speed, the screw that is responsible for this also needs to be either turned clockwise in order to increase the speed, or, you guessed it, in the opposite direction to decrease them.
But I want to warn you, be careful when adjusting the carburetor. Therefore, as well as depletion and enrichment of the fuel mixture, as well as the game with the speed, has very serious consequences.

When You Might Need Adjustment
With proper operation, a good Stihl 180 chainsaw (or any other) should serve you well and for a long time. But everything happens...
The most common reasons:
- Loose fixing screws
- The engine is worn out (in this case, adjusting this chainsaw, like Goodluck, or Sturm, will only help for a while, ideally it’s better to immediately carry it in for repair)
- The carburetor is clogged (in this case, it will also have to be cleaned).
Step by step setup
"Partner 350" is regulated similarly to many models of chainsaws.
This model has three controllers:
- Low RPM - L
- High - H
- Singles - T.
After production, these chainsaws are set to supply more mixture than necessary. This should only be the case for the first hours of operation.
When the motor is warm it is better to reconfigure it. At idle, turn the T screw counterclockwise until the chain stops, after which we adjust each of them in the order: L, H, T.
Screw L must be turned counterclockwise by ¼ turn at the moment when the largest turns begin at idle.
Screw H is adjusted as follows: warm up the carburetor and turn counterclockwise ¼ turn. To determine if everything is in order, you will need a tachometer. The revolutions must be the same as the maximum indicated in the chainsaw passport.

Your actions should lead to the fact that the engine immediately accelerates and makes noise like four times.
The Husqvarna carburetor is set up in the same way.
Partner 351 differs only in that its factory settings initially supply the optimal amount of the mixture, that is, everything should work correctly at once. But, if necessary, the instructions above will help you set up the carburetor correctly.
Ural adjustment
It is slightly different in that it should not be carried out at sharp maximum speeds, but make sure that the chain gains them quickly, but smoothly, without moving along the tire.
In any case, the adjustment should be taken very seriously, because if it is done incorrectly, the saw will not stay with you for a long time. Take care of your tools and if you are not confident in your abilities, it is better to take it to a professional.
Any of them, even a strong Friendship, needs attention and care. And then the chainsaw will be your faithful assistant for many years to come.
When purchasing a HUS365 brand chainsaw, you should be prepared for the fact that after a month of using it, you will not want to deal with any saw other than this brand. This is explained by its reliability, affordability, and most importantly - ease of operation.

How to flush a chainsaw carburetor?
To clean the assembly from heavy contamination, it is best to use a product that is commercially available in pressurized cylinders. Complete with a cleaner there is a dispenser and a long thin tube, which makes it possible to spray the product in any hard-to-reach places.
It must be remembered that cleaning the carburetor on a chainsaw is carried out using flammable chemicals. You need to work with them in a special protective mask and only in well-ventilated areas.
To clean the carburetor on a chainsaw, the assembly will need to be partially disassembled. The throttle body, adjusting screws, body and other parts of the carburetor will need to be washed with a can of cleaner and set aside to dry completely. Once all the elements are dry, the assembly can be assembled and installed back on the chainsaw.
Gasoline does not enter the chainsaw carburetor
If fuel does not enter the standard chamber, then this may indicate several breakdowns at once. First of all, you need to check the air and fuel filters. During long-term operation of the saw, these elements absorb a large amount of dust, which further prevents the infiltration of clean air and fuel. A slightly dirty filter can be cleaned with gasoline, but if the part is clogged with a lot of dust, then it will need to be replaced.
Another reason for the malfunction is the needle. This part is prone to sticking, especially in Chinese-made chainsaws. To fix the problem, in most cases it will be enough just to move the needle.
If fuel does not enter the chamber, then the owner of the saw should inspect the oil seals of the tool. After several months of using the tool, these parts lose their tightness. Over time, they begin to skip gasoline, as a result of which the tool stops starting. Repair is carried out by replacing the seals.
When starting the saw, the breather plays an important role. It is located near the gas tank cap of the saw, and performs 2 tasks at once - it maintains optimal air pressure and prevents fuel from leaking out. To check the breather, you will need to disconnect the fuel supply pipe and see how much gasoline flows out. If it does not flow out at all, then the regular breather is clogged with debris and dirt. In this case, you will need to clean the element and install it in place.
If fuel does not enter the chamber, then you need to check the fuel line. Most often, a Chinese hose is used to complete a budget-class tool, which eventually loses its tightness. In this case, it will be necessary to replace the line, paying special attention to the tightness of the channel joints.
Why does the chainsaw shoot at the carburetor?
If, during the start-up and operation of the tool, its owner hears sounds resembling shots, then this indicates a malfunction of the assembly in which the fuel is mixed. The reason for this, most likely, is the following malfunctions of the chainsaw carburetor:
- overtightened ignition - in this case, the fuel does not burn out, which leads to specific sharp shots;
- supplying a mixture with a low concentration of gasoline to the carburetor - to fix the problem, you will need to adjust the jets.
If the shooting sound comes from the side of the muffler, then the problem is that the fuel mixture is oversaturated with gasoline. If there is too little air in the fuel, then it will burn not only in the chamber, but also in the muffler. Evidence of this will be a large amount of carbon deposits on the inner walls of the muffler.
