The basis of the MAZ-5440M9 is a spar frame cut from high-strength steel, on which all the main units and assemblies are located (including an all-metal cab on front and rear shock absorbers). The length of the power unit in this model, compared to the MAZ-5440V9, has increased, the gearbox here is also longer than before. Plus a retarder. Therefore, the shape of the frame spars was changed. The possibility of mounting engines of various power and gearboxes of various sizes is also provided.
The chassis is arranged "in the image and likeness" of European main truck tractors. The optimal layout in the given dimensions was worked out by the "big seven" European truck manufacturers, and the Minsk Automobile Plant did not reinvent the wheel here.
MA3-5440B9 and MA3-5440M9 .
Rear axle suspension - pneumatic four-balloon, with automatic pressure control ECAS. On the front axle, the suspension is a small leaf spring. It is based on longitudinal springs and hydraulic telescopic shock absorbers. Tire size - 315 / 70R 22.5. Integral power steering, dual-circuit pneumatic brake system with separate rear and front drive and disc mechanisms on all wheels, anti-lock braking system, as well as ASR.
In the near future, it is expected to install lane control systems, as well as an automatic emergency braking system, as standard equipment of the car. systems.
All modes of operation of the engine are tied to electronics. There are electronic transmission control units. Due to these blocks, synchronizers disappear, the dimensions of the box itself decrease, its weight decreases, and reliability increases.
On the left is a fuel tank with a volume of 700 liters, on the right - for 400 liters of diesel fuel. This is the usual volume for a modern truck tractor of this purpose. Fuel tanks are closed with decorative aerodynamic shields. This truck tractor is also equipped with a side and roof spoiler.
On the left side of the frame there is also a 75-liter tank for the AdBlue reagent, and on the right side there is an impressive muffler-catalyst, in fact, a cleaning station. Thus, the space in the base of the car is completely occupied by these four elements.
There is no space left in the database for the receiver and batteries. Therefore, the battery compartment is located in the rear overhang of the frame, like the receivers. All European truck manufacturers have already come to this decision, and the Minsk Automobile Plant simply adopted this experience.
The fifth wheel coupling for MAZ-5440M9 is domestic: manufactured in the city of Kobrin, Brest region.
For the first time on this MAZ, spacious side boxes are provided. There are two of them: located both on the right and on the left side. The total useful volume of these boxes is 400 liters (2 x 200 liters). They can accommodate absolutely all the necessary tools, a supply of technical fluids, a gas cylinder for cooking on flights, and much more.
The rear-view mirrors received a different molding than that of the MAZ-5440V9, and became more informative. Special attention of motorists and experts was attracted by the optics of the new MAZ. All previous headlights were, to be honest, of poor quality. New optics - from. So far, it is made in the format of individual lenses. It is possible that in the future there will be their own one-piece block headlights. In the meantime, this is lens optics - with round headlights and a strip of running lights next to them. European manufacturers have not practiced such a solution on serial main trucks, but the optics are very similar on Ford Cargo saddles. Be that as it may, the optics of the MAZ-5440M9 looks great, and it shines just fine.
MAZ-5440
The first thing that catches your eye is the improved and modernized cabin. The developers have altered their source code to European standards, increased its height, gave elegance to the contours, which affected the improvement of aerodynamic properties. The appearance of the cabin is in many ways similar to European counterparts. To reduce the weight of the cabin, high-strength plastic was used. For improved visibility both front and rear, large rear-view mirrors were installed, and the front panoramic glass also contributed to this.
To protect the cabin and individual parts made of plastic from corrosion, modern painting technology was used. The chassis was also painted, and the plastic without paint fit perfectly into the overall organic design.
The designers provided drivers with all the amenities for long-distance flights. This also applies to the pneumatic driver's seat, which is equipped with many additional features. In addition to the driver's cab, there is one passenger seat, as well as one or two berths, depending on the modification. The control panel has been re-equipped with modern sensors and buttons, it has become more watchable and convenient. The steering system has been improved and power windows have been installed. In addition, an on-board computer, an automatic climate control system in the cabin, an audio system and a tachograph appeared.
For reliable operation of all main units, many components from well-known European manufacturers, in particular electronics, were installed. On models with engines from the MAN concern, a ZF-Ecosplit 16S or LiaZ box was installed.
This model with a basic configuration is equipped with a V-shaped eight-cylinder YaMZ-650 turbocharged engine running on diesel fuel. This motor complies with European environmental requirements and belongs to the Euro-4 standard. Careful operation of the unit allows you to overcome up to 800 thousand kilometers without major repairs. For a smooth start in cold weather, an engine heating system is installed. To work with the optimum temperature of the motor, a modern cooling system was developed.
Motor for the standard model with a power of 400 hp. capable of reaching the speed of the tractor up to 120 km / h. When driving at an average speed of 60 km / h, fuel consumption per 100 km is 32 liters. The volume of the fuel tank is designed for 500 liters. The MAZ-5440 is equipped with a 9-speed manual gearbox.
The wheel formula of the car is 4x2. The brakes are of a separate type, the rear and front wheels are braked by separate systems. MAZ-5440 has the following dimensions: height - 4 meters, length - 6 meters and width - 2.55 meters. The base weight of the truck is 7600 kg, and the total weight is 18000 kg.
There are several options for modifications of the MAZ-5440 truck tractor. MAZ-5440 A8 and A9 are considered the most advanced.
MAZ-5440M9 engine
Under the cab of the flagship MAZ saddle is a Mercedes-Benz OM471 engine with a power of 475 hp. Daimler calls this engine very simply - "the best diesel in the world." Well, Mercedes diesel engines in our trucks are nothing new. The motors of this manufacturer have long been installed on some new KamAZ trucks. Now the Minsk Automobile Plant has begun to do the same.
The same engine was used on the fourth generation Mercedes Actros. and has proven itself purely on the good side, as a reliable and resourceful power unit. Structurally, the Mercedes-Benz OM-471 is a six-cylinder in-line diesel engine with a displacement of 12.8 liters. An electronic limiter is provided that turns off the supply of diesel fuel at speeds of more than 90 kilometers per hour. This device is inherent in all European truck tractors.
The OM-471 diesel engine allows you to adjust the torque and power in a flexible range, depending on the modification and customer needs. In the case of the MA3-5440M9, the power of this power unit is 475 horsepower (350 kW) at 1800 rpm, the maximum torque is 2300 N.m (already at 1.1 thousand revolutions). But if necessary, the motor is easily boosted to 530 horsepower. Such flexible settings are possible thanks to the presence of composite camshafts and the X-Pulse electronic battery injection system.
An asymmetric turbocharger is used as an air blower. The technologies of exhaust gas recirculation, intercooling of charge air, combined lubrication and liquid cooling have been applied.
The "X-Pulse" system is an analogue of the "Common Rail" with electronic control that regulates the "injections" of diesel fuel injection. Fuel is supplied under pressure of 1160 bar. The maximum value is 2.7 thousand. The injector nozzles on this motor have eight holes. The engineers also changed the geometry of the cylinder piston. This made it possible to increase the compression ratio to 18.3. The rate of exhaust gas recirculation has also increased.
The engine complies with Euro 6 emission standards thanks to the operation of the entire BlueEfficiency “air cleaning station”, which combines SCR technology with AdBlue solution, EGR technology and a particulate filter. The particulate filter works together with urea. The engine is equipped with a particulate filter with active exhaust gas regeneration.
The use of an advanced electronic injection system provides not only an increase in power, but also reduces the overall consumption of diesel fuel. For 100 kilometers, the MAZ-5440M9 truck tractor consumes, “according to the passport”, 26.7 liters of diesel fuel.
The truck easily overcomes steep climbs when fully loaded with 20-25 tons "on board". The MAZ-5440M9 tractor has the possibility of engine braking. That allows you to reduce the load on the pads in emergency situations. The motor is distinguished by serious traction and a solid power reserve, which allows you to easily transport loads weighing up to 20-25 tons.
A feature of the modification is a new exhaust system. The only muffler in it is combined with a converter, as well as with a DPF particulate filter. All this equipment is mounted in one block to the right behind the cab. The new engine required a major reconfiguration of the engine compartment and behind the false grille. But in the end, access to service points improved. There are now an unusually large number of wires in the space behind the false grille. An interesting nuance is that the false grille of the MAZ-5440M9 cab rises along with the side deflectors, which was first used on cars of the Minsk Automobile Plant.

German diesel engines in our cars are far from uncommon. The installation of "Mercedes" engines has long been practiced at the Kama Automobile Plant. Now it's MAZ's turn. The Belarusian truck tractor is equipped with an OM-471 engine. The same engine was used on the Aktros. The engine has proven itself on the good side. This is a reliable and resource unit. OM-471 - a six-cylinder in-line engine with a displacement of 12.8 liters. The motor is equipped with a 12-speed G230 robotic gearbox. Again, this is a box from Aktros. The car has an electronic limiter that cuts off the fuel supply at speeds over 90 kilometers per hour. This feature is inherent in all European truck tractors.
The OM-471 engine allows you to adjust the torque and power in flexible ranges, depending on the modification and customer needs. In our case, the power of the unit is 476 horsepower. But as practice shows, this motor is easily boosted to 530 horsepower. Such flexible settings have become possible due to the presence of composite camshafts and the X-Plus injection system. An asymmetric turbocharger is used as an air blower.
The engine on the MAZ-5440M9 is equipped with a particulate filter with active exhaust gas regeneration. Thanks to this, the machine complies with Euro-6 requirements and can be legally used in the Baltic countries, as well as Western Europe. The particulate filter works together with the AdBlu system (in the common people "urea").
Transmission
The engine is aggregated with a robotic 12-speed gearbox Mercedes-Benz G230-12 AMT. But in general, there are three types of gearboxes: two manual and one automatic.
German-made on the MAZ-5440M9 and the leading rear axle is the hypoid Daimler R440. Although the manufacturer claims that in the future it is planned to manufacture its own analogue at MAZ.

The completely redesigned exterior of the cab immediately catches the eye. This is not a restyling, but a really completely new design, in which only the windshield coincides with its predecessor - MAZ-5440V9. The new appearance is due, to a large extent, to the new aggregate base. The front of the cab is tied to the new engine's large radiator width.
The emblems (letter logo of the plant and a stylized image of a bison) are separated at a greater distance than other MAZ trucks. Because on modern mainline tractors in Europe there should be a radar that determines the distance to the vehicle in front. And on MAZ-5440M9 it is. The operation of this device is affected by metallized elements, which is why the emblems are spaced apart.
When developing the design of the new cabin, MAZ specialists managed to refrain from copying the exterior of models from other manufacturers and at the same time create an original image, which at the same time retained the subtle "branded" MAZ features. At the same time, without exception, all the stamped elements that make up the cabin are completely new. Under the emblem there is a very convenient non-slip step for wiping the windshield. You can safely take steps to the sides on it, without fear of slipping.
Landing in the cabin is convenient - there are handrails and steps (you can store removable shoes on the second one, since the door completely closes it). The seats are high. The MAZ cab in the basic version is equipped with air suspension seats, seat belts, and two berths. Rear-view mirrors and power windows in the base are electrically driven.
For the convenience of the driver, air conditioning, a refrigerator and an independent air heater are provided. The instrument panel is fully electronic. You can start the car, for the first time in the history of the Minsk Automobile Plant, with the help of a button.
The interior design of the MAZ-5440M9 cabin is very similar to the Mercedes Actros - there is the same panel rounding, instrument panel and console design. Plastic here is clearly inexpensive, but of sufficient quality. The armrests have become noticeably more comfortable than those of the MAZ-5440V9.
The instrument panel has become multimedia. It is made for MAZ by a Polish company, but all the software is written by MAZ programmers. The illuminated shield is very nice. As well as the keys, which have become noticeably more ergonomic. Also in the cabin, the number of storage shelves has increased, there are convenient coasters / bottle holders.

Let's start with them.
Exterior
At the beginning of last year, the Minsk Automobile Plant put into operation a completely new cabin painting area with the most advanced equipment, which allows the use of two-component enamels. There are several enamel suppliers: from Russia, Belarus and Europe. Among the European partners is the eminent concern BASF.
The difference in visual perception is very clearly visible in comparison with the production car.
The exterior panels of both trucks are exactly the same, however, due to better and more expensive paint, as well as a color accent on the details, Prostor looks much more impressive than MAZ Prostor - a clear illustration of the fact that funds and efforts were spent on creating a new cab painting area not in vain. The first thing that catches your eye when you approach this car is the quality of the paintwork. This has probably never happened before on domestic trucks.
The pleasant impression is complemented by an unusual color scheme. The main surface is painted in dark gray metallic, and individual elements - rear-view mirrors, door handles, grille trim - in matt light gray. In combination, this gives the truck a noble appearance.

Interior
Inside the "Prostor" is not recognizable at all. From everything that formed the interior of MAZ tractors before, there was nothing left. The first feeling is that I got into the cockpit of a Volvo, Mercedes - anything but MAZ.
The dashboard of Prostor is so strikingly different from the old one that before touching it, you want to rub your eyes. Does it exist in reality? Exists. We touch. Oh Gods! The material is pleasant to the touch. Moderately soft and at the same time elastic. And the design itself is in line with modern European trends.

Only those who are personally familiar with both domestic and European trucks can appreciate how big a breakthrough this is - the appearance of a new, high-quality European-style dashboard on a domestic truck. Perhaps, in our realities, this is a more serious innovation than, for example, a new engine or gearbox.
The design and quality of the dashboard material has always been the weak point of all domestic trucks. According to this indicator, the automobile plants of the entire former USSR constantly lagged behind the Europeans by ten or more years. What MAZ managed to do brought it closer to European competitors by several steps at once.
No third parties were involved in the development of the new dashboard. Both the design and manufacture of this element were carried out by the automobile plant itself.
Naturally, the new dashboard should also have a new instrument panel. And he is. The design was also developed by MAZ itself, but the shield was made by the Minsk Electromechanical Plant and the Vitebsk Plant of Electrical Measuring Instruments.
The new configuration of the shield provides for the placement of the dials, which is noticeably different from the usual. If before the large speedometer and tachometer were placed in the center, and the rest of the sensors were on the sides of them, now the main instruments are located at the edges of the shield, and the diameter of the dials of the speedometer and tachometer has noticeably decreased. The fuel level gauge, engine temperature sensor and pressure gauges of the primary and secondary circuits are now located in the upper part of the shield.
In addition, a lot of pictograms are displayed on the shield, informing about the voltage in the on-board network, the oil pressure in the engine, and so on. The central place is occupied by a multifunctional display, which displays a lot of other data. In general, domestic drivers have yet to get used to this amount of information received. You will have to get used to the bright green illumination of the scales in the dark.
By the way, about the backlight. Finally, the ABS, ASR buttons and the rest of the control keys located on the right hand of the driver received it. It seems to be a trifle, but very important.

The interior door panel has also been replaced. The shape of the armrest has become more comfortable. The side pocket has gained a more ergonomic shape. It is strange that there are no electric lifts at the side windows. I would like to hope that this is just the cost of the first copy. But in Prostor, electrically adjustable mirrors are implemented, also for the first time. The mirror control lever is located on the armrest.
Sleeping area
The role of a sleeping place in the life of a trucker is huge. Those who spend the night in a truck know this very well. What new does MAZ "Prostor" provide in the field of sleeping achievements?
There are some minor changes, but you can't call them revolutionary. The width of the sleeping shelf has slightly increased. Perhaps that's all. Headrest - do not raise. There are no small pockets for small things next to the sleeping shelf.
In general, Prostor's sleeping bag is quite solid, but the linkers and designers of this part of the interior should turn to studying the vast experience of the Big Seven in this matter.
In the event that a trucker stops for a rest during the day, a useful option is provided - a full-width windshield is lowered from above by a sunblind. This solution is much more efficient than standard sun visors. Really good at blocking frontal bright sunlight, tested. These curtains are also on the side windows. They can also be successfully used while driving. True, they will have to be lowered "not at full capacity."
For spending the night in the cabin, curtains are provided around the perimeter with thick curtains. However, to completely curtain the windows, you need patience, diligence and a large supply of obscene words. You can’t move the curtain along the eaves with a slight movement of your hand. Each hook must be pushed with a finger separately, literally a centimeter. As a result, the night screening turns into a serious ceremony.

The night curtain cornice and its fittings are perhaps the only element of the interior that I frankly did not like. However, this is a claim not so much to the car factory as to the supplier of components. The detail, the cost of which in the total cost of the truck is mere pennies, while delivering real inconvenience, is a clear mess. However, the disorder is resolvable. I think replacing the curtain rod and its hooks is a matter of one phone call to another supplier.
Summary
For reference, it is necessary to say a few words about the Prostor units. An in-line diesel YaMZ-651.10 with a capacity of 420 hp is installed under the cab, complying with the Euro-4 environmental standard. This is an engine that has been produced by GAZ Group under license from Renault Trucks for several years. MAZs with such an engine have long been a serial product.
Gearbox - mechanical 16-speed ZF 16S1820TO. Of course, an "automatic" to give more prestige to "Prostor" would not hurt, but this is already a matter of price.
Since Prostor is not innovative in terms of aggregate filling, we did not pay close attention to them. Both the engine and gearbox are familiar from previous models.
When creating the MAZ-5440V9 "Prostor", the Minskers pursued the goal of making a truck with an attractive appearance, significantly changed and modernized in terms of interior, which, at the same time, should not be noticeably more expensive than the usual serial production. We liked the car. The factory workers managed to achieve the goal. Appearance is great. The interior decoration has been taken to a new level. “What do you want more? Reviews about MAZ-5440M9
In Russia and the CIS, no one or almost no one buys the MAZ-5440M9 yet - there are cheaper trunk saddles, and we are still far from switching to the Euro-6 standard. But, of course, there are those who want to speak about this modern car. Basically, they regretfully pay attention to the fact that the machine is based on imported components and assemblies and there is practically nothing of domestic production in it.
Even the governor of such a remote region as the Sakhalin region, during his visit to Minsk, became interested in the fifth generation MAZ.
They also express their skepticism about the quality of the metal from which these same domestic components are made - namely, cabins and frames. After all, MAZ-5440V9 and MAZ-5440E9 received notoriety precisely because of the increased corrosion, which the car begins to cover in the first years of operation. Moreover, small pockets of rust start up not only in those places where the reagents get, but also on top of the cabin, and even on its rear wall. But, of course, the front fenders and the edge of the radiator grill were especially hard hit. I would like to believe the manufacturer's assurances that this problem has been solved on the new MAZ due to better galvanizing and metal coloring.
